something let go in the drive line the other day i suspected the tranfercase just climbing a steep road underload and bang !! no warning no drive in any gears hi or low.still at a mates place havent taken the drain plug out to look at the oil yet i herd thiers a slip joint between the auto and the transfercase and they can go or mabe a broken chain either way not good thanks chris:::wheelchair:

did you try locking the centre diff? I've heard of axles/diffs breaking on the road while driving.

1991's has a viscous coupling with just a high and low ratio.

Splines in torque converter failing. Slunnie this is relevant to what you are doing.

Hello Chris it will more than likely be the transfer case shaft between the rear output and front output behind the viscus

I did mine before it went Bang as It is a common problem with high k Rangies mine had done 360k and was ready to go bang.
they are very easy to dismantle and repair.
