Story goes, Supercharged 3.9, 200+ kays, 5 psi boost, LPG new, cooling system is excellent, 4 core rad, EL fans genuine ford not crap,

Had a tick for a while now:eek: like leaky manifold/sticky lifter, *cough* liner *cough*

Under boost and load, temp rises FAAAAAAAAST, pushes a bit of water out and we're cooking, not rapidly but quick, every 80ish kay's we're reaching 100c and stopping cooling and topping water, only taking 3-4l's

I'll be lifting the heads, tomorrow and I don't WANT/NEED an answer, just thought everyone would like a quiz and see if they can pick the fault from the symptoms, ask more questions and share you opinion:)

Bugger how do I add a pole now?

I'll go the Liner as the problem............

I know of a LSE with the same symptoms... but his does not have a blower

no, its got to be the auto....

the cooler for the auto is causing too much heat flow in front of the radiator and this is causing the over heating, the ticking is just the beat cancel on the radio.

If its not fitted with an auto then its the ambient rise in temperature caused by following a vehicle with an auto.

in all seriousness, assuming that the tappets rule themselves out as the cause to the tick then my moneys on a liner slipping and assuming that the cooling system is actually A1 and the tappets are noisey then its a liner gone porous.

but either way its block work

Possibly the power aerial?

25th April 2008, 01:02 PM
Personally, I would be checking the voltage drop between the top of the air intake cover, and the point 15 cm inside the exhaust measured from the rear, at the 2 o'clock position.

Should the voltage be + /- 10% of the difference in the voltage between the point on the windscreen where the rego sticker is, and the 8 o'clock position on the spare wheel, then there is your problem.

The solution is simple thou. Put your car on a trailer (most important - dont drive it any further), and bring it to me. I will arrange for it to be disposed of in the most efficient manner, minus a small handling fee ofcourse (currently 87.6294% of reimburstment of disposal fee)

Problem solved.

Your intake air is getting in too slow causing the supercharger to cook everything!!!!You need one of those ebay intake supercharges to speed it up,cheap as to fix, around $30 inc delivery:p:p:p:p

it needs a hiclone...

on top of fixing the overheating the additional economy and power gains will render the supercharger superflous so it can be removed to be sold to some unsuspecting sap thus enhancing the wallet and lightening the vehicle.

With the money gained a second hiclone could be fitted in reverse on the exhaust pipe (might need 2 if its got duals) and between the weight savings of removing the supercharger and the preformance gains from the multiple hiclones setup will result in the engine developing soo much power that it will actually suck the left over hydrocarbons out of the atmosphere force them backwards up the the injectors to be condensed by the cooling effect of the existing fuel in the system to pool in the fuel tank. When full this can be sold off to less suspecting fools to further line your wallet.

Pulled it, no slipped liner, no blown head gasket:(

BUT, damaged piston tops and a chink of steel in 1 pot similar in size to the tip of a medium flat blade screwdriver:eek:

No damage to bores, has been bouncing on the outside of the piston for a LOOONG time, till it lodged in the head

SO, I'm deciding if its diesel time, shuck it on another 3.9, new pistons, reassemble or buy a Toyota:p

Still to find the heat prob, will drop water pump and thermostat tomorrow and go from there

Atleast I think I found the ticking:D

Found the problem yet ? My old rangie when it blew a tin gasket was making the tick. tick. noise, wasnt loosing coolant or overheating but compression was leaking and causing the ticking of the valley gasket. Also had a similar noise caused by one of the air pump head ports leaking.

Did a comp. test before I pulled it apart, 120-135psi all pots, so nothing wrong there

water pump was like new, didn't bother with thermostat, its gonna get dieseled now anyhow I think:D, needs a full pull down to check the pistons anyhow, so might wack something in for now, till I find a decent diesel substitute:angel:

Hello Matt & Emily I am of the opinion that whilst on the West Coast with our group and during ure track marking strategy to lead the way for us slower movers, u have injested a convict into the snorkel and then into the blower he is tapping morse code to escape as he is no longer in Van Diemans Land and is feeling a little out of place.:D:cool::D
Just a theory I have

I thought you had Damo's Chev diesel up there or is it sold already?

Or are you thinking of adding a lot more noise under the bonnet and fit a 4BD1-T?

I would have put some Melb cans on a head gasket but I would have lost them then wouldnt I :D

Really need to mate something to a ZF, that would be easiest. I still think the 4BD1T will destroy one but what about a different isuzu motor?

Oh yea, forgot about this

https://www.aulro.com/afvb/images/imported/2008/05/371.jpg

Chunks of metal floating around in the bore aren't a good thing,, this is what I found and the sole reason for not reassembling and keeping the blower, the chunk had been there a loooooooong time and had ended up recessed in the head, I could have reassembled, but having that in the back of my mind, while spinning 5500rpms up a hill, just didn't take my fancy

And a good excuse to try an IZOOZOO, now it'll be 3200rpms on the governor:(, I wonder how it'll go if I lift the governor speed a little:angel::twisted:
