I am wondering why know one is mentioning the 35% tax on fuel?
None of the media outlets have got onto this as obviously the revenue "shylocks" (aka the tax office) are earning a huge amount of money now diesel is $1.70 litre than when it was $1.00.
What would be wrong with the government rolling tax back so that they got the some revenue as when fuel was $1.00 a litre.
This would help keep the price down and take some pressure off interest rates.
Makes some sense to me but I am only a simple School Teacher and not an economist.
What do you think?

YEah, it is an interesting point. I thought that when the lpg tax is increased they were going to be taking some tax off other fuel. I may be wrong though and realistically it would probably not make much difference if they do anyway.
Xav.
P.s. I call one of my dogs (a puppy) Piddler, he is constantly on the prowl for another place to relieve himself :p

Excise is 38c/l which does not change with increase in retail price. But of course, GST is on top of this, and that does increase with price. Note that the GST goes to the states and territories, not the Commonwealth, and this will have increased from 10 to 17 cents per litre with the increase. (worth noting that only a small proportion of excise, I think about 12c, and no GST is committed to roads, or even other transport). The GST component now amounts to nearly 50% of the excise, more than double the proportion when it was introduced, and excise was decreased to allow for GST.
Then of course, nobody mentions taxes on oil production, which vary from reasonable to confiscatory levels, although we should only consider Australian production (which has the same range), plus of course taxes raised from the entire oil industry (employees income tax, payroll tax, company tax, excise on their inputs, import duties, licence fees, building permits, contributions to political parties, etc etc) and the oil company profits fade into insignificance.

Hey come on be real.
They have to pay for government ministers and CEOs junket trips, pornographic art exhibitions and the torch relay some how.:o:o
Oh yeah and I forgot what little does go back into WA roads only gets put into already overdone roads between Perth and Bunbury. The rest of the state dont exist.
Thats got me started now, with most of the countries revenue coming out of country WA and bugger all going back in.

I would not complain too much as Australia has one of the lowest taxing regimes on fuel in the world. Our fuel while not the cheapest in the world is far from being the most expensive.
In an unregulated market suppliers can charge what the market can sustain - retail cost often do not directly relate to the cost of production - more to do with what the public is prepared to pay. It stinks - yes but that is the way it is.

hi guys
back In the 80s when the tanker drivers were going on strike for better pay and conditions didn't the government step in and call fuel an essential service and stop them from striking???? so whats changed its still an essential service so why can't the government step in and stop the blatent rip off the oil companys are perpetrating on the aussie public ??? the only other way is for the government to setup terminals and compete with them to lower the price . the other thing that annoys me is the .9 of a litre price why don't the government make them round to whole cents ie : $1.49 instead of $1.489
rant finished
cheers mark

Wait till kevin 07 gets his way and brings in cpi increases on excise. He has tried once since the election and was defeated in the senate, will have to now wait till after the new senate with the greens in control.
