Ser3 Speedo connection

Hi guys
I have a series 3 that has had the speedo replaced by a rev counter. Does anyone have any clues as to how i can reinstall the speedo, where i can get it done or where i can find the glass cover for the speedo? I am in adelaide.

Speedos are probably available from most of the suppliers of Landrover parts except dealers, but will be pretty expensive. Glasses are not sold separately but a glass supplier may be able to help. I suggest the best bet would be to look for a good second hand one from someone wrecking a Series 3 - should be quite a few available I would think, maybe someone here. Speedo cables are available from all the usual suppliers.
Note that the speedo is different between the long and short wheelbase, and both the speedo and cable are different for the Stage 1 (V8 or Isuzu). They also had a different speed range for the sixes, and came in both metric and miles, and with and without a trip meter.

Any motor mechanic would do it, but as it would take a bit of time, it would cost more than it is worth, as it is really quite easy. It is quite a simple job, but I suggest you get a workshop manual and/or parts book to see just what is involved. What is required is roughly as follows.

1. Remove instrument panel (obvious screws), disconnecting battery first. Leave wires etc connected.
2. Remove tacho from it and replace with speedo. Install bulb holder or connect wire, depending on how it was removed. Fit earth wire under one of the mounting nuts. Speedo is held by a U-shaped bracket which holds it against the panel after being pushed in from the front.
3. Connect the speedo cable, which is probably still in place*, reinstall the instrument panel, reconnect the battery.
* If the cable is missing, get a new one and thread it from behind the handbrake drum, left then up over the chassis, over the bell housing and up behind the dash and through the grommetted hole in the bulkhead. It is secured to the drive by three small screws, and clips on to the speedo. It can be installed without removing anything except the instrument panel, but may be easier if the panel under the centre seat and the LH floor (and possibly transmission tunnel, which means the RH floor as well) are removed. The bonnet should be removed or folded back against the windscreen.
