Show us your Camel cut

I have to gain some clearance for bigger rubber...

So, show me your panel skills.
Did you just cut it? Did you then cover it with flares?

Did you fold it, ala factory, but with a new profile say like the front gaurd shape? (this is the way I would like to go). Did you just cold bend it with maybe some snips along the way? Did you attempt to heat it first? Did you repaint it, what with? Mine is silver so I was thinking of some silver hammertone to touch up afterward, it wouldn't look out of place in a wheelarch.

Where the black Trim is on the ouside of body work is , well that's how much I've trimmed mine right back to right to the edge of the Trim , but shortly be fitting 35" flare kit on the Disco so i assume may have to camel-cut mine further, sorry had to post your pic up here so i could see it..

Until you actually get the bigger tyres just smack the two folded edges with a rubber mallet to get them out of the way. Might need pliers to bend the lower horizontal folded edge though.

That's all I did to get the 245/75 16 Bighorns on.

Disco owner what size are yours currently? I notice yours are sunraisyer (sp), maybe different offset from factory wheels.
I thought I'd have to cut for 245s.
Justin that is one of the tyres on my shortlist. So you haven't cut for them at all just rolled? Are they ok stuffed right up into the gaurds, do you have rear sway bar connected?

Tyre Sizes are 245/75R/16 , and you are dead right , the Steel rims are different off-set to the factory rims , that's why i had to trim so much off the guard ,wish I'd know about all this before I bought the rims:(

I may have to change my rims again when I go to 35" tyres thou

but getting back to your original question , I cut the guards with the die grinder and trimmed it with metal file, didn't fold them in or anything.

Dan all I did was the fold. They rubbed before I folded the lip when just driving over the gutter but on a recent trip to Arcot Station they didn't rub at all.

This is the only photo I have of the tyres fitted to the car. Unfortunately it stops short of showing the part we are talking about but just to show you what they look like in general.

I did mine yesterday and it wasnt as hard or time consuming as i had read elsewhere. I marked 2" rearward from the bottom of the guard and then ran masking tape along the top edge of the rubber trim then ran a line from the bottom tapering up to the tape, put a few layers of tape on then got out the grinder with a thin cutting disc and cut away about 5mm out from the mask line.Then carefully cut remaining 5mm strip, paint didnt even blister, then i just used a file to carefully remove the rough edge on the inside of the guard cut. Took no more than 20 mins from marking to finish and you can hardly tell its been done, will take a pic tomorrow and post it. Went out today with 265/75/16 MT's without a drama.

Just curious ... why is it called a "camel cut"? Is it related to Camel Trophy or something to do with the humped animal?

Yes this guard mod name taken from the time they first used D1's in Camel Trophy. The US team first introduced it I think.

loanrangie are you running those 265/75's on standard 16X7 LR wheels? Also you appear to have no lift or at best <2" of suspension lift. Is that right?
