Just cleaning my pride and joy today after Sunday's outing with Col.Coleman and others, I happened to notice the stamp on the steelies.

5,50F x 16 x 33.

Considering I know some of the figures I'm guessing that reads as:

5.5" wide x 16" tall

.. but the 33? Does that imply they were originally designed for 33" tyres like 255/85R16's?

Wishful thinking on my part it may be, just curious if anyone actually knows...

This was mentioned here a while ago. The 33 refers to offset IIRC.

33 mm offset - same as RR 1970-1994, Disco 1, and Defender.

This means the face of the centre of the wheel where it sits agains the hub face is 33mm outwards (positive offset) from a vertical centreline through the wheel.
