oil filter question

Hey all,

this is a pretty novice question, but im starting to do my own oil changes and have been shown once before.

how tight do you do up your oil filter when you put it on? do you just hand tighten or use one of those funny wrenches with a flat rope on it?

itcan vary from brand to brand, but they usually have it written on the side of the filter somewhere...

Hand tight, Normally 3/4 to 1,1/2 turns from the point when the seal touches the filter head. If you over tighten the filter you will have a hell of a time getting the filter off next time. Some brands of filter have indicator marks on them which makes it easy to work out when tight is tight.......:D

All the above advice with the proviso that after an oil change things often tend to be a well, oily ;), about the place & it can be hard to get a grip on the new filter to tighten it so I use a three arm wrench that will tighten as well as loosen & to ensure I don't overdo it, I mark the base of the filter, black marker on pale filter body, tippex type marker on dark ones, then I can see exactly how far I've turned it. I usually use 3/4 -1 turn.

Also prime the filter with oil then dip your (clean) finger in it and lube the oring.

No problems in having a go mate, it's a good way to learn about your Disco, saves ya money and is fun ......


Second all the above, important to lube the o ring, it's the little black rubber duvi whats it in the filter. No problems using a filter wrench (can't actually remember what they are called), anyway they do not need to be too tight as when they get hot and expand a little it seals up no worries anyway.

A good tip is to give it a good clean after you put it on and after you have been driving for a bit have a quick gander at the filter. If you don't have it tight enough you will find a little bit of oil dripping off the end of the filter. As stated in previous reply, just remember, whatever you tighten may have to come off at some stage so take it easy, unless tightest is best ......

and always double check the filter head to make sure the old gasket/O ring hasn't been left behind.
