Thanks in advance

Fit a range rover one with a spacer is the best way to go, a possible issue with fitting a P76 starter is that the front driveshaft and the starter solenoid can make contact breaking the casting. This happenned to us at Fraser Island at Xmas time in an auto (thank goodness I didn't turn off the car - MR Automotive at Redcliffe where able to get a replacement starter to us within a couple of days

As GuyG said you gotta use the spacer when you use rangie starter
or you'll brake the nose cone on the starter sooner or later

I ended up getting a gear reduction hi-torque one for my terrier engined jet boat from my local auto elec.......way cheaper than a standard one too..... 2 winds and away she goes

Hi Gents,
I have a recently aquired 4.4 in a 2door, and have a spare rangie starter motor, how big is the spacer you talk off, is it simply a plate of some thickness between engine and starter, or is there an alignment issue too?

You can just bolt up the rangie starter , But as others have said a collar should be used;)

An alighnment issue under thrust. A lathe concern. Do it and it will be worth it. ;)

The spacer is a ring that fits over the nose of the starter so that its a snug fit into the block, many dont use it but if you can make or locate one i'd use it.

Thanks Gents, So this Spacer doesn't hold theh starter away from block, but rather fills the gap so starter is held or located better?

Thanks All, I think in short I can use it to get me out of trouble, it will get me home and a long way if needed, but maybe I should find/make one if I can.
Thanks all for comments.

As RM said it could well outlast the engine but if you look at the 4.4 block and bolt a rover starter you will see a gap all around the machined starter snout, the ring is just for extra support- you could probably get away with some good silastic.

Hi All,
When I started this thread I thought that I would have a few weeks left in the starter motor to source another......wrong!!!!!
Its finally gone and I cannot for the life of me find one for the 4.4.
From the replies to the thread I am now urgently after a starter for the 3.5.
If anyone is keen to sell one or knows anybody that does it would be appreciated.
Thanks again for your replies

A starter out of 3.5,3.9,4.0 or 4.6 should work. My 4.4 now runs a P38 4.0 starter with a spacer. Turns over faster and uses less amperage. The early 3.5 starters are nearly all buggered these days. Good for a door stop. ;)

Cheers Some one will have to make one for you. Where are you located?
If you cant get one I can make one for you next time I'm at the lathe.
I make them a heat shrink fit so it stays on the starter.

<snip> .... a possible issue with fitting a P76 starter is that the front driveshaft and the starter solenoid can make contact breaking the casting. ... <snip>A long time ago this part of the thread, however.
If there is a problem in how close a 4.4 starter gets to the front driveshaft on a RRc. Source a front driveshaft off a 1985 Torqueflyte-727 auto, they were a solid bar instead of a steel tube and therefore you get a little more clearance between the shaft and the starter.

This place is the go:
Hi Torque Starters (http://www.enginecentre.com.au/starters-leyland.html)
Made for the p76, also solenoid location can be rotated 360 degrees
thought I'd share. I only stumbled upon the website. google only brought me to this thread.
also I found Land Rover Parts - Home (http://roverparts.com.au) helpful with my p76engine rebuild. Valley gasket, bearings, seals etc that I couldn't get from local parts shops.
