Just spent a couple of very wet and cold days up in the high country (Vic). Drove up over Mt Stirling then on down to Pineapple Flat where I camped.
Took a bit of a tour up to Lake Cobbler just to kill some rain/sleet time and couldn't help but notice the almost complete lack of track sign posts.
Now I have a reasonable knowledge of the area and also had the laptop on the passenger seat with Ozie Explorer doing its thing so I was fine, but the weather was absolutely crap up there this week with snow and sleet being almost constant, I just wonder how someone not so well equipped would go navigating up there with no reference points?
Whatever happened to the souvenirs of a good trip being the photo's you took along the way?
People caught knocking off these signs should be locked up :nazilock::angrylock: before someone pays very heavy price for their ignorance.

I always assumed the missing signs was because of the recent bush fires?
poor form if they are being stolen.

Sign theft is real common.
We have 2 real popular ones that constatly get nicked.Taylors rd,a month or 6 weeks would be a record.
Pig Gully Rd,a week is about as long as that one ever lasts.
The signs with Quindanning on them seem to be very popular too.
Costs the shire thousands every year in replacements.

I was doing some contract work for a government instumentality last week.
I found a Hut decorated with heaps of track name signs, locality signs etc.
Can't wait to see what happens to the culprits myself.

I presume from this statement you reported this infringement to the appropriate authorities ?

Most of the signs are gone due to the fires, we had the same trouble when driving around when we were there.

In my view, anyone travelling in the Vic High Country or similar areas and relying on road signs is asking for all they get.

Peter
PS: When I was a member of a wilderness search & rescue group, we once found a missing bushwalker in the Budawangs. She was travelling solo & wanted to sue the NPWS for not providing more detailed signage.:eek:

Is that a problem?
As a taxpayer it's my property too. Apart from it being inconsiderate to people who might actually need to use a sign for safety.
Just thinking of anybody who needs to call emergency services to an intersection or other reference point.

If I remember correctly "Mullulup" town sign was a bit of target in the Sth/Wst of W.A. as well. Not to mention "Droop St" in Footscray, Vic!

Well new to Victoria...i had maps and a GPS and still had a bit of trouble in a couple of area in the Buller/Stirling area...the signs are a good ref! not that i just rely on the maps and GPS on its own...would also just double check in any case i sign road name etc etc it was very tight in some area and not always easy having to double back with a camper trailer...was our first time in the area and had a ball! was a fantastic weeking and looking forward to our next trip...

What a STUPID and uninformed response. If you had actually READ the start of this thread you would have noted that I was making the point that people relying on paper maps and in need of reference points could find navigation in the area difficult. What do you carry...... a SEXTANT?

Wedderburn has two signs that were stolen weekly before the brains trust of the Shire decided to mount them with two posts and one way fasteners
"Titwobble Lane" & "Teddy Bar Lane"
Allen, I hear on the bush telegraph that there are approx 500 new signs going into the Mansfield area of the Alpine NP....

Hymie,
Good on you. Just to show we are all not ambivalent. :D
If you look at the Aughtie Drive signs around Albert Park the sign is designed so the A is hard up against the left edge.
It doesnt stop the odd joker adding a cardboard "N" to it though...

I was gonna let this drop , different horses for different courses takes all sorts to make the world go round etc
I will be polite here and say Record spinner, I am not ambivalent I just think if I came across
"I found a Hut decorated with heaps of track name signs, locality signs "
It would be none of my business, they could have been brought at auction, garage sales found at the local tip anything really...
And just to set the record straight, yes I to would do something about criminal activity, might not be Dob them in though...(a heavy weight on the fingers works most times...)
I bet you blokes peek through your curtains to see if the next door neighbour is braking water restrictions don't you...
And as for the safty aspect of missing sings in the high country or the bush if you go to theses places without the proper nav aids and the ability to use them you deserve all you get but I suppose you ....... would sue the local .Gov for not haveing the aproperate sineage so you didnt get lost. .......
theres to many people sticking there noeses in where it shouldn't be these days fair on gets my goat...
There that should clear up any ambivalent thoughts....

Hey Wardy,
Settle petal!
I get the feeling that you thought that I was making an attack on your post. It wasn't so. What I was alluding to was that people are more-and-more relying on man-made features, such as signs, when they should be getting their navigation skills up to scratch.
No, I don't use a sextant, but I do carry navigation aids and detailed topo maps (which I can interpret).
Feel better now? :)
Best Wishes,
Peter
PS: As mentioned to other forum members, constructive advice is welcome, personal abuse is unwelcome.

On topic to some extent...:p
Some of you in Melbourne may or may not have noticed new signs being erected which are referred to as Emergency Markers. These signs are being installed in public places such as Parks and Landmarks, in areas of high community traffic such as Birrarung Marr & Fed Square and many walking trails.
If you need an emergency service and you are at a location which has an emergency marker nearby, you quote the emergency marker number to the Calltaker when they ask for your location.
Once entered into the CAD System, the Dispatcher is provided with step by step instructions to provide the attending emergency personnel on how to gain access to that particular area (i.e. who to contact to get keys) and where exactly to go to find you. This is also backed up by GPS coordinates of where the sign is which can be provided directly to the Police Airwing.
I've attached some files & a photo which gives you an idea of what they look like. If you have a new Melway, look at Lysterfield Park and Albert Park Lake and you'll see them detailed in there as well.
I say all this as there are a further 700 markers being rolled out this year across the greater metropolitan area as well as surround country areas such as Lerderderg Gorge. These will start appearing in areas we all frequent such as entrances to Parks as well as central areas within the Parks such as a camping ground or picnic area.

They could have been bought or found on a tip I suppose, but they happen to be signs I replaced after the 06/07 fires and were brand new.
I can see you point about nosy people though.
