Finally got a chance today for a few hours to test out the Disco after the lockers and 4.11's went in.............
:D:D:D:D:D:D amazing the differance in capability :D:D:D:D:D:D
The ability to drive tracks slowly and pick the line you want to take is awesome, instead of picking your line and bouncing/wheelspinning into no mans land:eek:.
One thing that gave me a fright was when driving a section of track with deep ruts, two wheels on the drivers side in the deep rut, other two wheels on higher ground, front and rear locker engaged. When the rut ended and the drivers side of the disco started climbing out of the rut, what surprised me was the height off the ground that the front left wheel got:eek: I'm used to the disco lifting a wheel but this was crazy. Got to a point where i felt i should stop or risk a roll over:eek:
I backed up and tried a few differant lines but the end result was the same, car at angle i've never reached before, front left wheel about a meter off the ground:eek:
In the end i got through by getting a mate to put some weight on the front left of the bullbar and inching forward sloooowly until the balance of the vehicle changed and the front wheel came down, back onto an even keel;)
I understand that there are some new skills that need to be learnt driving with lockers, should i have aproached things any differantly?Had great fun though!!
Any advice or tips fellas?

Cheers, Phill

Just go steady as it seems you did.Be wary that with the front locked steering is reduced markedly and in very slippery conditions no steering at all.

Yeah, the lockers will let you drive it over onto its side.

My disco isn't locked, but in my rangie I never found lifting a front wheel about metre to be of concern (have been much worse).

Having said that, you must be much more careful when the left is lifted because torque reaction from the engine and drive line will lift the left further and can lead to rollover.

and to follow the previous post,
with lockers you can find your way into much more dangerous situations than ever before, as the non locked car couldn't go there.

also be cautious of the lockers not unlocking due to windup.

thats good enough for some entertainment value for the people not in your car and sometimes good for axle snappage.

I know what you mean i have recently added lockers and had the same experience like you i am just taking it easy and slowly learning a new driving style.Lifting wheels that far is unnerving especially on steep hills.Hope you enjoy the new additions Cheers Brett

Another thing to look out for, is if you do start spinning wheels then the locked end(s) of the car will start to slide around rather than just sitting there and spinning, and that can get you into some really sticky positions.

Im gona sound like a prat, but can someone explain why lockers has any influence on axle articulation? Cant see it in my mind how you will loose articulation with lockers (front).

If thats the case, I much rather keep articualtion and no lockers, picking a better line...

With lockers the locked axle will keep pushing....

In this same track a week later, the lockers pushed it up towards the embankment and onto its side!

good question

lockers do not change your articulation, where an unlocked car will stop due to it being at max articulation and on a steep slope therefore loosing traction a locked car will continue on which often means you lift a tyre higher while you are going the rut or what ever.....not sure if that makes sense but thats the way i see it

Lockers have no influence on articulation, they do however affect the ability to go round corners, due to the differential being "Locked" both wheels on the same axle will turn at the same speed. With just the rear diff locked the car noticeably struggles to turn, with the front locked also you generally go straight whether you want to or not:p
With lockers you can drive difficult terrain alot slower and more controlled than with open diffs as you have alot more traction and don't have to use momentum as much as you would with open diffs.

OR just get yourself an unlocked Lada and drive thru the ruts while the Discovery and Fender drivers watch!

Sorry Toombie couldn't help it! (You'll notice it is the same track... closed now unfortunately!)

They waited at the top while we drove down and then back up. They couldn't believe we did it.... let alone twice! The beauty of a SWB and wheels right on each corner!
