buying tools for s111

Hi everyone.. i have been looking round for tools for the workshop, and i'm wondering if i need witworth tools for s111, or whether i can survive with a/f set. i did search old forums but didn't seem to find what i was looking for, there was some info about s11, but i'm told the fasteners/bolts used changed through the series. ( i didn't want to cop a bollocking for not searching).thanks!

90% of what you will need to do will be covered by an af set 3/16th through to 1 1/4

Series 3 is mostly AF, with a bit of metric if it is a very late one (e.g. 5 bearing engine). There will still be a few BSF sizes, one that comes to mind is the studs holding the drive flanges, although late S3 may have gone to AF heads on these.

And the other thing you need to be aware of is that since a lot of assemblies are interchangeable back to Series 2a and even 2 and 1, you may well find you have "retro" BSF sizes here and there.

I would not bother getting Whitworth size spanners except when you need them for specific jobs, but probably worth keeping your eyes open at garage sales etc and picking up common sizes - they are usually very cheap.

ok. thank you Dave and John. I'll set my sights for a good a/f set, there's some good sets on ebay at the mo..As far as witworth goes, i can lend some from brother in law, a mechanic himself, as he's working on enormous mine machines in Emerald, he doesn't need his set for a little while.

It wont hurt to get a metric set either, I've found on the series III a lot of the bolts dont go into captured nuts, so you will need a spanner or socket for each side. There are a few Metric and A/F socket/spanner sizes that are the same size (or close enough), saves you buying 2 sets of the one type.
I recently had some tools pinched out of my shed and I replaced them with Sidchrome, I got a 20 piece Socket set (Sockets only) 8mm to 32mm 1/2" drive, cost $108, and a 14 piece set of open end/ring spanners 6mm to 19mm, cost $127, good value for tools of this quality.
Would recommend to anyone buying some tools to get a "Rotator" Sidchrome Ratchet, I have a 3/8 drive and it is the handiest tool I've used in a while.
