As I don't have a bar anymore, I think this an OK compromise to mount lights. I have read that if your numberplate is held on by only two screws, replace them with small bolts and fasten the top and bottom of the numberplate so that the lights don't vibrate.
Time to visit Autobarn then...

Another option is to make your own from a piece of ~80mm angle aluminium, $5 from the local scrap merchant.
Also if you are mounting on a plastic bumper run a nice thick earth lead back to the chassis for the lights so that they have a good current return.

Most auto parts shops carry them. Repco also.

I considered that but thought the sharp forward facing angle might get the transport authorities upset.

The one I made was of about 4mm thick Aluminium and I rounded the forward facing corners off. You probably have a point though.
