The company I work for has asked me if i'm interested in working for them in Salt Lake City, Utah :o:eek::p

I'm considering it, could be a great career move. There will be a recce trip arranged in the next few weeks, after which we'll know if it's going to happen.

My question is, does anyone have experience of importing old landies into the States? Or a good forum to ask in the US (not like those miserable poms ) :wasntme:

My Stage 1 ute is over 25 years old; I'd be keen on taking her.

But my County is a couple of years away from being eligable for import. She's in great condition; i'll never find another like her. Do I store her here for a couple of years, or sell her ?

Anyone been there? Opinions and comments welcome. No doubt many will involve mulitple wives etc.:angel::angel:

If you like a drink you will have a problem. Dry city, unless things have changed. Lots of dry counties in Utah. The Mormon majority don't even drink coffee and tea if they observe their faith's rules.

My take on it, go for it work experience in a foreign land why not.
Our contract officer in Iraq was from there a hell of a nice bloke.
Spent some time in utah a few years ago nice place.
On the landy, I would be doing the storage thing, Easier than shipping over and back again.

I have visited there - one of my close friends is from there, nicest bloke you'd ever meet - but I can't say the same about his uncle that I've also met, so I guess there are all sorts there, same as anywhere!

I'd go for it as an experience.

The White Motor Corp. Western Star truck plant was in Ogden, Utah. The factory used to close down for two weeks for the deer hunting season.

One of the first things I looked into. :D

It is not completely dry any more, but you can only buy beer up to 3.2% alcohol in supermarkets

You can get stronger, but only from state-run outlets or 'members clubs'. I'll be looking further into this over there!

I'd definitely go...on some preconditions:
1, They pay for ALL the shipping of ALL your stuff, both ways, even if they decided to fire you half way through the contract.
2, Full medical cover for the whole family, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week
3, A fully paid trip home to Oz annually by business class for the whole family
4, A diplomatic clause on your housing lease - if they fire you, they pay, not you.
5, Fully paid schooling for the kids (if you have em) in a quality school.
6, Forgot about the 1-2 months fully paid hotel while you find a place to live
7, At least 1 vehicle, preferably 2.

I have been to the US a few times for work and pleasure. The last trip saw us drive from El Paso TX to Vancouver in an Australian Built county 3.9D. We stopped overnight in Ogden. Everyone was unbelievably friendly! It was like stepping back in time to the 50's... We went to an italian place for dinner, that had "Polygamy Porter" on tap. :D

My BIL's company was bought out by a company based in SLC. So he spends 2-6 weeks a year in Utah. He really likes it, but the people are extremely conservative, and also quite sexist. They think their (autonomous) Australian division are lefty pinkos, even though they are just average aussies - the Utah division also couldn't believe it when the Australian division appointed a female boss...

Utah has the best skiing in the world!!! And also some great 4x4ing.

I think I could handle it for a year or two, but after that I would be sick of only having 2 weeks holiday a year (maybe negotiate for more) and all the americans... :D;)

When Alfred Sloan was president of General Motors he was reluctant to commit GM funds to their Australian operation. GM-H had to fund themselves locally. Sloan thought Australia was a communist/socialist country because we had government owned railways and shipping line.

Thanks EchiDna.
Most of those are on the table - at the end of the day the package has to be right. ;)

Tempting, seeing as NAS 90's are fetching crazy prices.

I know it is turning to the dark side, but I do like the look of these:

2008 Toyota FJ Cruiser (http://www.toyota.com/fjcruiser/)

They are cheap! Starting at under $24K USD :o

or one of these:

Dodge - 2008 Challenger (http://www.dodge.com/en/2008/challenger/)

Not sure about the ground clearance though

Mate at the age of 43 I have spent over 10 years as an expat,

As Echidna posted, and in the order I would expect things

Full medical cover for the whole family, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. ADD to that dental, important, do you have kids???

They pay for ALL the shipping of ALL your stuff, both ways, even if they decided to fire you half way through the contract. to add to that, the exit is the one that MUST be Nailed down hard, also if a house hold is involved you will need a time limit ie delivery time included.
The other option is a cash up front resentment package. This is the way I usually did things, why spend 20K to move every thing, when I could set myself up with nice new stuff for the same.

Fully paid schooling for the kids (if you have em) in a quality school. Use British council standards, if possible in the US.

Now they will have there laws re renting driving etc etc, its all a head ache big time. For example, when we arrived in Adelaide, not knowing anyone ( and still don’t) with only Russian and Chinese efpos and visa cards. How the hell can you do the 100 points stuff?? How can you open a bank account rent a house. Now every country has some system that will stuff you up big time, just you will not know about it until you get there. Best to get the company to do as much as you can.

Also get a copy of the local immunisation schedule for kids, and merge that with what’s been done here, do it before ( weeks ) you leave. Get a certified copy of the kids vaccinations, and any other health problems, you telling them is just not good enough. International DL, get a local road code you will be surprised how many little differences there are. 1 little mistake, and a forren DL, legal or not could get the cuffs slapped on. if I remember correctly, you give way to the right even though you are on the right, ( same Russia china SE Asia) you give way to oncoming turning traffic ( like NZ) and there are some roundabouts that look like round abouts but are not, so you have to gave way when you are on the round about. etc etc

lastly DOINT MENTION THE WAR ( any of them)

Oh and you will fined that they ( as nice as most of them are) are very limited in there worldly views, just don’t get involved in the topic, they are always correct, and you will get on fine.

Personally I hated the place, but then I was in SLC and in my mid 20s and wanting a bit of a leer up. That was a no go. I did date a chick for a bit, but once I was at her parents place, watching TV on my own, I changed channel to a basket ball game, all the players were negro. Her mum came in the room and was very polite but she did point out to me that “ we wouldn’t have those people in our house so we don’t have them on our TV” I dropped her a bit latter never got past first base.
But on the hole thay are very worm welcoming people, come in sit down have a feed type, with all the confidence that they are living in god blessed land and that they are the chosen ones. I would go in a heart beat
