I have a god awful feeling that the rear oil seal on my 300Tdi is leaking. There seems to be a weep between where the engine and gearbox unite.
The RAVE says 6.25 hrs to renew. So how much is reasonable to expect to have the job done?
Is it possible that should the seal be faulty, engine oil can enter the auto transmission? This is something I certainly want to avoid.

I'd rather say the t-pieces on the last bearing cap have given up the ghost. If it was the rear main, then you'd get oil coming out of the bell housing somewhere.
Either way, it's a tedious job.
The t-pieces can be done when you do your next oil change. Drop the pan, and you can take the rear cap off easy. Putting new t-pieces in is fiddly, especially when you combine it with silicone sealer ( And putting some silicone on the faces of the rear cap /main oil seal housing - they butt together). Then, resealing the pan involves cleaning the mating faces surgically clean, using a decent silicone ( I use dow corning silastic 732 ) and the technique stated in RAVE ; ie a bead around the edge, let stand for 10-15 minutes and torque in the correct order to specs.
I did it some months ago with the same symptoms, and it's good so far.
