Hi all,

I hadn't run my winch for about 6 or more months and I tried it the other day and it ain't working anymore. I suppose I should have been running it regularly and this might not have happened.

The soleniod pack is clicking when using the controller to wind the winch in or out but that is it.

I checked inside the solendoid pack and around the winch motor for loose wires but eveything seems tight.

It's booked into ARB where it was fitted, they reckon probably corrosion around the armiture and brushes and it will need a rebuild. The earliest to get it looked at was 4th June.

Any ideas who else I can see that can do a good job on Warn winches in the SE Melbourne area?

Thanks

Chris

never owned an electric winch but i'm guessing any auto electrician should be able to look at it

Hey Chris, They arent that complicated really. I have taken my xp's and an xd9000 apart loads of times. You could probably do it yourself with some basic tools and a bit of time.

Not bad for Warns "Enviromentally Sealed" winch is it!

After posting this I did a bit of a search and found this on another forum.

"Just FYI for people that use Warn 9.5 XP Winches with a feet forward mounting (like on some 100 Series bumpers). The motor has two drain slots 90 degrees from each other. The winch motor comes from the factory configured so it will drain when mounted feet down and the other drain hole is sealed with silicone. If you mount it feet forward, then the motor needs to be removed, the sealed drain hole opened and the other one sealed.

If you do not do this, then you will end up with a trashed motor if you get water in it. "

I need to check to see if ARB made sure the drain is situated at the bottom. If it isn't then I'll be asking ARB why not. I'm only assuming that the reason why itisn't working is that the motor is seized and needs replacement and I'm sure the motor is quite expensive.

This is a reasonably common installation error on the 9.5xp

My XD9000 would fill up with water and cause the brushes to stick due to the corrosion. If you pushed the button (spooling in or out) the relay would click but no-go. If I held the remote button down and smacked the motor a few times the brushes would contact and away it went. A good clean out and a spray with WD40 and drilling a drain hole was all mine needed. I would be asking questions if they need to fit new parts

I posted the same info about the drain holes on here probably 18 months 2 years ago had a new motor from ARB under warranty and interestingly enough I thought that I would admire their work and found that the new motor had been mounted exactly the same way and had to pull it apart rotate it 1/4 turn and reseal it!

Thanks guys for confiriming what I was guessing.

I have another question. The ARB BB on the Disco3 has a coverplate under the winch. I was going to remove it and look up under the winch motor to see if I can see the elusive drain holes.

Can you spot these holes without pulling out the winch?

I basically want to know for myself if the drain hole was correctly aligned when ARB installed it 2 years ago. If it wasn't then I'll be questioning their installation and reason for failure.

Thanks again.

Chris
