defender 130 i was looking at purchasing, just had RACQ check and its come back with a few problems.
Rear main oil seal engine - gearbox leaking
Gear box noise, all gears other than Neutral and 4
unable to remove gearbox filler plug
fuel leak at filter
oil leak front of transfere case
My question is, should i continue to purchase this? is so what should i expect to knock off for the work?
Are these problems really bad?
other samll problems noted
cracks in aux drive belt
play in wiper linkage
surface rust at front cross member
real door seals worn

Everything is normal. Td5 or tdi300? If td5 the fuel leak could be expensive. Need more details on asking price, year, model and general condition.

So is the engine rear main or the gearbox input seal leaking?
Gearbox layshaft bearings may be worn
Others are typical and should be easy fixes.
How bad are the oil leaks???
How many km and what model? As above, they are fairly typical. However the engine or gearbox will have to come out to fix the oil seal. Worth haggling a bit off the price on that basis though.

T/case filler plug is a bitch, so probably normal. Also a bit awkward to get at so hard to get a good position to really give it a go... Can't help with anything else though.

I agree with Psimpson - gearbox noise and (major) oil seal leaks are unusual for only 25k km. That is an average of only 3.5k per year - a bit suspect.
IME - Landies that travel so few KM have just as many problems as high KM vehicles. Sitting around isn't good for them.

Why is he selling it? There better be a new one sitting in the front yard to replace it, or I wouldn't be that confidant. We don't sell 130's for no reason. I'll give him 200 for his tub. want to build another trailer.

You might want to get a couple of quotes for the cost of fixing it then. Then I'd take that off the price and like Col.Coleman said find out why exactly he's selling it.

juddy asked about tub flares like fitted to mine. No i bought mine over 18 months ago from a mate who towed a 7.5 metre centre console with it. I talked him into a new canter dual cab because they were so good(he he) now I have his 130.
Too many crap ones out there

hes moved to Sydney, so no longer has use for it. So the jokes aside is it worth buying, and what is a fair price to ask off. and yes i did get a 130 but it had to be called off. so thats why iam looking at this one

I'd do as Col.Coleman said and take off $5k, if you are going to pay someone to fix it you'll want a bit spare in the pocket. FYI the agreed value of a MY03 td5 130 with my insurer is currently $35K

It is a trade off between how bad you want it and how bad he wants to get rid of it. If it seems ok and you are prepared to spend some cash, then it should be ok keeping in mind your racq bloke won't be used to the built in landrover rust prevention and other quirks. How bad is the gearbox noise. And are you prepared to wait to find a decent 130 (rockinghorse ****). Too many variables too offer exact decision advice from here, but pick a figure taking in all accounts, stick too it or walk. You need to be comfortable with the transaction as it will now be yours to love and fix. Bargain
