has anyone ever fitted a 2.5 turbo diesel into a series 3? i believe they are a very similar block design to the standard 2.25, so i'm hoping it will be a reasonably easy fit. also what do they sell for? i've been quoted $5500 for the engine only. it has been fully rebuilt with a new head. this a fair price?

the tdi200 will pretty much drop straight in. I wouldnt want the turbo on it if your keeping stock sereis running gear.

I think the tdi300 goes close but need some minor fiddling to make work.

2.5Ds never came to OZ - but that doesn't make them more valuable. If it were me, I would try to find a 200Tdi instead. Should be able to pick a good one up for less than that (you can get a whole disco with onje fitted for less).

Not sure what you mean?

A 2.25, 2.5, and 200Tdi will all bolt straight onto a series gearbox. The 2.5/200Tdi need you to relocate or raise the battery to clear the timing/injector pump assembly though, and I think for the Tdi there is one stud you need to remove or drill a hole for to get the bellhousing to bolt up. If you use a disco 200Tdi there is also some complicated plumbing to get the turbo dump pipe to clear the footwell.

If you fit a 200Tdi to a series box, you need to have a gentle right root (unless you remove the turbo as some have done). You can fit the LT77S box which came with the engine, but that is no longer a bolt in proposition. If you do that you need to either (1) buy an LT77 to series T-case adaptor from ashcroft, or (2) fit the LT230 t-case.

Option (1) gives you a drivetrain that is 4" longer, and option 2 is similar, so either way, you will need to at a minimum move the engine mounts and radiator support - and maybe also change propshaft lengths.

Just a thought, The 6cyl transmission is mounted 4 inches further back than a four. Would the 200Tdi/R380/LT230 go better into a 6cyl chassis than a 4cyl? I know you'd still have to modify the firewall and battery carrier...

the price i've been quoted is engine only. the box is extra. now i'm not too sure what to do. will find out some more info and do another post. cheers for the help so far.
