In the UK at the time they made that ad, the body that controlled the quality of advertising had laws that said you could only show something if it could actually be done in real life, so to prove the Defender could winch itself up the dam it was fitted with a bank of extra batteries to the run the winch as the incline was too great to run the engine. There was an article about this in the Land Rover International magazine several months ago. Apparently the driver was pretty anxious aswell dangling on the winch wire.:D
