Hi all ,
Lately , I'm experiencing difficulty in turning the key in the ignition - just like when your steering wheel locked up , only that its not . Occuring at least once a day . Have to keep forcing it until the ignition turn . May even take 5 minutes of trying . Been spraying WD-40 to the ignition but doesn't seem to work .
Any idea ?

I have similar problem with my D1. I used graphite powder and this seemed to work ok. Go easy on the WD40 as this can just attract more dirt and gunk things up even more. The barrel may be worn or your key may have worn down too. If you have a spare key try using that as it may be in better condition.

Same answer as SLEEPY but:
Watch that WD-40 treatment as it is flamable and also may give the wires in the barrel a bridge to earth :(

Get a new ignition switch assembly now, don't wait until it seizes permanently in an inconvenient location!

Anyone know if the ignition switch servicable ?
Is a new ignition switch assembly expensive ?

Hi This used to happen to me about 6 months ago, especially while i was on a beach in nth QLD :(. My key had a slight bend it it obviously enough to stop it turning the barrel. Have a good look at yours and give a pannel beat.

Mine is doing a similar thing, wear and tear, actually has a groove the key has worn in the lower side of the key slot - not looking forward to replacing the barrel - no idea about cost though - sorry!
Actually I think in the last nine months I have experienced every D2 issue known to man - but I still own it. Am I stupid or what?

Had the ignition lock overhauled by a locksmith (well the service guy organised it for me anyway). Works like new now.
Apparently it is caused by crud (key plating and metal filings from outer lock surround) getting into the lock.
I think it was in the $300 mark (can't remember if this was for the overhaul only or it included the removal and fitting).

Had my D1 ignition fixed by lock smith he cleaned it but also showed before reinstalling whear the alumin casing had worn were the square steel sholder on the key that stops it from going in any further hits. What he did to mine was drill a small hole through the ignition and placed a steel pin in so that the end of the key hits the pin at the desired turning point as the key was going in to far and would not line up to turn. It has now has worked fine for over 12 months.:)

G'day ,
Thks for the replies .
Called the local LR service centre and was informed that its a ' common ' issue . Advice ( as Big D suggest ) to get a locksmith to ' service ' it . They will communicate with the locksmith over the phone on how to get the ignition barrel out of the vehicle .
Now to get a locksmith locally who is willing to do the job . Otherwise , a 2 hours drive to LR centre to arrange a locksmith to service it there .

I used to have that problem too. Go to a locksmith. Tell him your problem and ask for a can of synthetic lubricant. If he cant suggest one email me and i'll get you the name of the one i use.
Put a cloth on the floor of the car and spray the lube in for a few seconds. Put key in and out for a while then repeat the spray thing. Do this until the barrel works properly. I haven't had a problem for about 4 years now but the synthetic lube is the key because it doesn't attract dirt and further gunk up your barrel.
Hope it works for you to.

Should have touched wood after my last post.:mad::mad::mad: Murphy's frickin law strikes again!
Key jammed yesterday and was not going to turn.:mad::mad::mad:
Graphite powder useless.:mad::mad::mad::mad:
RACV visited and broke off key in lock...:mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::ma d::mad: Thanks Guys!!
Locksmith fixed for $159:), said the barrel was worn and key was going too far in as 4wd4fun said. Similar fix. For info a second hand barrel and key was quoted to me at $110. Probably get one cheaper but may just be facing the problem again in a few years. New barrel was quoted at $275 (fitting extra).

Sorry for the delay, It took me a while to find this stuff again. Its called 'Super Lube'
DRI-FILM Aerosol (http://www.super-lube.com/drifilm-aerosol-ez-69.htm).
I am fairly sure that this is the link for it. I bought it at Glenferrie Locksmiths who have just moved to Church St Hawthorn 9819 4635. Call before you go to this place because he's not always in these days.
I hope this helps, sorry i was so long getting the info. Baby number 4 coming in two weeks and i'm under the pump.
Regards All.

Hey 2 Rocks I'm feeling your pain. I too have had far too many D2 issues since I bought the girl 12 months ago. The ignition key is almost my last straw - been playing up for ages and has finally seized up yesterday. Thank goodness for this website and such generous people with information, I'd have been lost without it through all my trials, and my local LR gurus. I've yet to get much time to bond with my D2 between the dramas....... will it ever happen?

Hey MMR
Yes it will! Despite everything I love mine dearly and wouldn't swap it...and I'm getting to know it really, really well! :p
Persevere and I'm sure you'll be rewarded - and there'll always be plenty of encouragement on here .
