Well we put all the new fork and throw out bearing in the disco 1 and it works well BUT with the foot on the clutch it makes a whirring noise ????? what could it be ?:(

Isn't that with the clutch not engaged, no load on the bearing:confused:

it can only be one of 2 things if it only does it when your foots on the clutch

the throw out bearing and the spigot bush/bearing.

If it does it as soon as you put any pressure at all on the pedal its the throw out
if it doesnt do it and then it comes on gradually or suddenly if you pop it into first its the spigot

if it was doing it when your foots off of the clutch but the box is in nuetral then its the input gear bearing, the mainshaft center support bearing or something out of whack in the 3/4 syncro. (the last 2 are the least likely as youd also have hard shifting for 3/4)

Dave, what about an intermittent rattle here ?

Still the input shaft bearing, or more likely the thrust race bouncing back and forth between the fork and fingers ? (no staples on the fork/thrust race)

urmmm..depends...

if its a light kind of feathery rattle its the throwout rattling the throwout fork or off of the pressure plate.

if it goes away when you very very lightly rest your foot on the clutch pedal that nails it as the above.

thats more than likely the case

if its a more metalic sound it can be the input bearing, grab a stethescope put it on the main plate of the gearbox and you'll hear the noise nice and clearly. have someone put their foot on the clutch and if you'll hear the shafts slow to a stop and if you'll hear the bearing doing its thing if its the culprit.
