I know people say that without a re-map of the ecu you wont see much difference with a bigger intercooler. But with todays weather, and other cold nights, my 110 is SO much better to drive, and is exactly at the level of drive ability Im wanting. If I were to upgrade the intercooler, could I expect to retain this level of performance during the summer months?
(my ECU cant be remapped, and Im not really wanting massive power anyways)

urm no, it wont.... well not all of it anyway.

I'm pretty sure Graeme on here started with an intercooler only and found that there were gains to be made with only this modification.
IIRC it was more at the top end where it performed better.

an ex-LRA engineer claimed 20% power/torque increase on the Storm (TD5) engine they had on the dyno at Rosehill way back when it first came out with only a bigger I/C (double the core thickness) and small boost increase (IIRC it was only 1-2psi)
I don't doubt him, he is a pretty straight shooter and a damn good engineer.

Its a shame that wasn't a factory fitment then.
An aussie conditions thing, a bit like the bigger radiators etc.

at the time, they were looking at re-powering the ADF 110's with it. Mark's job was to electrically quieten the thing, which he did, then Ford bought them, and the whole project was canned.

Yeah, I'm not sure the TD5 is really the motor that the ADF wants.
What happened with Ford and canning the TD5. Was that an ADF decision or something that was pushed down from Ford?

...my ECU cant be remapped...
Why not?
Im assuming your TD5 is a pre-2002. These can be re-mapped but require a little work before re-mapping. We do loads of them over here in the UK. The issue is that the pre 2002 models have an OTP (one time programmable) chip on the ecu board. That needs removing and a flashable chip putting back on in its place.
Im sure someone over there will do it...
As for changing the intercooler only... Your core inlet temperature will be cooler and so your ecu will issue more fuel if need be. You will however need a remap to allow you to produce more power but cooler inlet temps will allow you to use the available power more quickly.
Hope that helps.

At the time, BMW's plan was for Oz to be the centre of Military Engineering, South Africa to be military production and Solihull to continue on with Civvy stuff.
The ADF were looking at re-powering the 110's and 6x6's and so LRA ran through the feasibility of it all. The big sticking point was the electrical noise issue and the UK had spent upwards of 1/2million pounds and still couldn't quieten the buggers. The engineers here did it for a touch over A$100,000.
Anyway, it was all go and as soon as Ford took over, PAG banned all military stuff. It was one of the very first decisions made under Fords tenure. It didn't fit into their marketing plan. So Mark was out of a job (outside contract engineer) and I think a few inside weren't there too much longer, which was a shame, as there were still a few good blokes left over from the JRA days at Moorebank with bucket loads of experience and a real passion for Land River.

hey Gentlemen,
I have a 2003 Defender 90 which has been rechipped, and is now quite brilliant on the motorway and much more driveable around town (well, the Gold Coast anyway....), so much so that I am even tempted to consider a bigger intercooler. My question (silly or not) is who does the recalibration/remapping of the ECU? What type of mechanic/workshop is equipped to do it if I supply/fit the intercooler? I just don't know of any on the Gold Coast. Advice gratefully received. Cheers, robg

Thanks Isuzu,
I haven't talked to Rick so far because I don't think he does that. He is very much a "keep it standard" guy. But there is not much LR stuff he doesn't know about so I suppose yes it would make sense to talk to him
Ta, robg
