Hi
We're looking at a few defenders on the net and wondered if anyone knew either of these vehicles:
4 wheel drive, Landrover Defender, 4x4, diesel - eBay, Passenger Vehicles, Cars, Cars, Bikes, Boats. (end time 28-May-08 17:08:48 AEST) (http://cgi.ebay.com.au/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rd=1&item=320253572222&ssPageName=STRK:MEWA:IT&ih=011)
or
1996 Land Rover Defender 4x4 Wagon, Turbo Diesel 300TDI - eBay, Passenger Vehicles, Cars, Cars, Bikes, Boats. (end time 28-May-08 22:07:18 AEST) (http://cgi.ebay.com.au/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rd=1&item=220236422836&ssPageName=STRK:MEWA:IT&ih=012)
SWMBO has her heart set on a deefer, and we are actively seeking to aquire one in the next few weeks if the price is right
I'm happy to get a 300Tdi (parts commonality with my d1), or a early Td5 with CDL.
Cheers
Justin

Hi Mrs.ho har,
They mean the sideways facing seats in the very back. Often missing the seat belts when the previous owner has removed the seats and belts, but only replaced the seats for the sale. (Belts lost in shed somewhere????)

It's a bit over 7 hours from here to Gympie, so we might head up and have a look on the weekend. The 2000 model looks like a clean slate to start adding stuff to, but the 300Tdi is at the right price if it's been looked after.

Looks like we might head up there on Friday night and have a look at the 300Tdi on saturday if the owner is going to be available. If everything is as it appears it might be the go. Only thing that worries me is SWMBO's request that it gets pink frangipani seat covers & frangipani decals on the rear windows!

Well we're going to head on up to have a look at the Tdi this weekend. Staying in Brissie friday night, having a bo-peep sat morning and heading back to Armihole Sat arvo/night.
Can anyone give me some pointers on what to look for on a 96 defender? where might rust be hiding, noises, smells, etc.?
Cheers
Justin

i see its advertised in the markets as well
good to see that it has had the timing belt done and by the looks of it the owner has kept it mechanically maintained
a big one to check...well not that easy when you are dropping in to have a look is the gearbox main shaft and input gear, if the drive train sound good and is smooth it should be good, it can be inspected by pulling the pto plate of the rear of the t-case
have a close look at
the rear door, rust and cracks
front doors, around the bottom for rust
passenger floor for rust from air-con dripping water
ask where all the work was done at
a little far away but MR Automotive do a pre purchase inspection for around $80 and the chack the main shaft
i can give you a guided tour around my rig either tonight or tomorrow morning (footy 8:30 - 10:30am) before you head up, if you are on the northside mine will be over a service pit and you can have a good look

Well, we're now the proud owners of a '96 Tdi Deefer  . We drove back from QLD late last night and the Disco never skipped a beat. I'll head back up there to pick up the 'fender later this week.
SWMBO registered with AULRO last night, so I'm sure she'll be along here soon, in the introductions section, to say "hi".
Cheers for all the advice and help we received, it made the decision much easier

Good choice at least you'll be able to test it out on the way home. Done that trip many of times used to live in Tamworth but havent done it in the fender yet.
Just a shame that another fender is leaving the state :(:D:D..Enjoy

I'm heading up north overnight and will be picking up the defender in Gympie at lunchtime tomorrow.
I feel it's going to be a long trip home....

If it's on a trailer, it will be. If you're driving it the trip will pass like a beautiful dream.
..But when you get it home you'll go into Defender envy and this will place pressures on your relationship with SWMBO, who for her part will become very possesive. No known cure other than another Defender, I'm afraid.

I'm driving, don't quite know how I'll pass up the temptation to head up every overgrown track that I come across :D
I'm sure I'll still love my Disco in the morning

Well I got it back to Armidale at 10:30 last night. Whoever the enstein was who installed the driving lights decided to run the power directly off the high beam circuit, so low beam was infact more useful
So 5hrs of driving at 90Kph later and I was stuffed. Concentrating hard with poor lights, driving a new truck, and topping it of with pouring rain just made the trip so memorable :Thump:
Hit one cat and barely missed 2x foxes, 1x roo, 1x wallaby & 1x owl. I think I only clipped the cat, but the B-Double sitting on my backside finished the job
And for your info Dobbo et al, I'd take my Disco anyday  Must be getting soft :D
