Hi all. I'm new here and don't yet (and never have) owned a Land Rover or Range Rover. I've had 2 Patrols, 3 Landcruisers and 1 Forester in years gone by but haven't had any 4x4 to speak of for the last 3 years.

The time has finally come where I'm now looking around and am thinking perhaps I should check out the Land Rover / Range Rover. I don't have a huge budget but checking out the used car classifieds I've seen quite a few that meet my budget. I'm not too fussy about extras as long as it's LPG (petrol and diesel, especially, are just way too expensive). It seems the year models that meet that and my budget range from '93 to '98.

What I've come to all the learned folk at this forum for is some advice. Basically, what should I know before I buy one? What are known problems, issues, quirks etc that can pop up with these vehicles? Any tips you can offer for what to look out for, what to avoid etc.

Any advice / help on the above would be greatly appreciated. And hopefully soon I'll be posting in the intro forum pictures of my new ride and taking my young son out to experience what the bush has to offer.

Although Diesel is expensive just remember if you're looking at those years they have the 200/300Tdi in them and that will always do 10 litres per 100kmh pretty much no matter what. So don't just chuck the idea of a diesel out I guess because they are a great engine. Nissans and toyota as you are accustomed to generally don't get those figures or even close too. If you consider lpg in a v8 @73c per litre (last time i looked) and you are using about 20 litres per 100 you would be in a similar price range to diesel. However I think you still wi with the v8.

What will you be using it for?

IT sounds like what you need to do is just get the latest model you can which has a full service history. And looks like it is in reasonable-good condition.

First, thanks for the rapid replies.

Second, my location is beautiful Waterfall, south of Sydney, surrounded by national parks.

Finally, I must admit my first preference was diesel. All my other cars (except the Subby of course) were diesel. It's just that at almost $1.80/L it's 2.5 times dearer than LPG and it kind of freaked me out. If 10L / 100km is what I can expect I'll re-run the numbers and see what comes out.

Just do your homework and preferably pick a well serviced example.

Forget about the V8, yes they are cheap but you end up paying the extra in fuel and Icecream (because you have to stop for fuel more often than a diesel).

300TDI is a bomb proof engine if looked after properly (which isnt hard to do) and even though on paper the V8's look more powerful, in reality there isnt that much between them once on boost.

The V8 has a great note from the exaust but it is a pretty high price to pay IMHO

Nothing much goes wrong if you get a good one, but some of the early Disco's had a few quality control issues but most would probably be out of service by now if they were too bad.

Iv'e had 3 discos a 93 , 95 and my current one is a 99 td5 d2

the 93 was a 3.5lt on gas auto very reliable didn't spend a lot on it apart from regular servicing (very important) 20l/100kms

the 95 es disco 3.9 lt manual on gas 21l/100kms was a problem child I was always fixing something on it but in saying that it never let me down when we were out quality at the time of manufacture was poor but you now can pick them up cheap if you want work on them a bit

the 99 d2 I purchased last nov at a car yard at sylvania near you for $12000.00, 200,000 kms with full log books 10l/100kms stock standard

don't know what you budget is but if its low $2000-4000 check out around 93 models if its more go as late as possible 97-98 models just my experience with them the Range Rover guys might be able to tell you more about them . one things for certain once youv'e owned a LR your hooked gotta love em

A good 93/94 RRC will get 10k easily, with good gas ans even a new motor and good cond they are often selling for 13-15k.

Get a cheaper one and spend money on it yourself or buy one where all the work been done for you.
Either way though, it will cost you.
I just sold my 93 for $13500.
Great unit with new motor a 4.6, gas and everything pretty much replaced.
So the old saying still goes, something is only worth what somebody wants to pay. If its worth it buy it, They are actually not exp to run.


Keep changing oil and drive sensibly.

At this point my budget is up to (at a stretch and if the family CFO allows it of course) $15k so from what I've seen I should be able to pick up something reasonable. I must say that despite originally looking for LPG I am starting to lean more towards diesel. I am looking into the whole vegie oil alternative and noticed a few threads in this forum. That would sure make things cheaper, if it works, and I have a very convinient source (hopefully).

Well, the search goes on. I am a little better equiped knowledge wise but if anyone else has some tips, please post them here.
