Winch solenoid failure

Was just testing stuff on my 90 yesterday for something to do, and motored the front winch out a bit and then back in using the external switches.....

Seemed to work fine...

Went to motor it in a bit more and the solenoid just clicked.... tried to go out and it clicked.....

Then it decided to motor in all on its own:eek: staling the motor by the time I had got to the isolator!

Hit it a few times and that seemed to put it back to just clicking.

Anyway I have swapped it for the rear winches one (there are albright solenoids, not the Warn ones) and its fine so its definetley a solenoid failure.

Scanned ebay for a bit last night and they seemed to be about $225 dollars, but I think they may be cheap chinese ones so I have ordered one from Devon 4x4 in England. Delivered for $170.

Looking at the solenoid, it seems that it may have got water in it..;) not great as they are supposed to be sealed and solidstate!

Oh well!!

we were out in the scrub the other weekend with Stooge and some others when his winch started doing the same thing. You could hear the solenoid clicking but nothing was happening :eek:luckily it didnt take off like yours as it was attached to another car :(

I am not sure if Stooge has had a look at it yet, but we summised that it would have been water/mud that has caused the problem given where we had been lately :angel:

even at $170 it seems a bit steep for a solenoid :confused:

There was a damn good thread on the Outerlimits General tech board a few months back discussing who had the best winch solenoids in Oz ATM.

I'll see if I can dig it up.

seems like a lot of dosh for a 12volt solenoid, me thinkim good quality ones here lots cheaper. we get aircraft ones for starter outa usa, will check prices tomorrow.
and what stuffs solenoids [other than water in them] flat batteries!

Seems like the albright DC88-540PL is a pretty good choice and thats what I have ordered so lets hope it is good!

At the moment I am running the piranha solonoid pack. Seems to be much better quality than some others so I am wondering who supplies it for them. Its starting to become a lucky dip with where things are manufactured.

Not wanting to have this to me I mounted mine in the engine bay above the drivers side suspension damper top mount on the inner wing. You can access it through the black vent panel.

I've seen people suffer with faulty solenoids before and the main cause does appear to be water ingress. The sparky at work did also say they were crap solenoids. :D:D
