View Full Version : D1 Gear selector

Hi Guys

You know when your truck is in neutral, the gear lever sits idly in the second gate between thrid and forth?
We yesterday mine ('99 Disco) stopped resting the and now rests in line with first and second.

I am guessing that the selector bias springs (opposing) have come out of kilter somewhere. I am also guessing that the cnetre console has to come out and a bit of delving into the selector mechanism is called for.

My question(s) is(are), has anybody had this happen to them? Have they fixed it themslves? Is it a quickie (one evening in the driveway) job or a drawn out (better put an afternoon aside) one?

Any input will be appreciated

Regards

Jason

It sounds as though the bent up metal tab restraining one of the two springs has parted company from the rest of the assembly causing the restrained spring to push the stick to the left. The tab is probably floating around and could cause some difficulty in selecting gears if it strays.

This has happened on mine.

So to fix it if this is the case:

1. Do you have a RAVE workshop manual? (there is a decription of the disassembly procedure for getting access to the gear selector)
2. Do you have a pop riveter or access to one? (to refix the boot to the console)
3. Can you weld or do you have a mate who can? (to reattach the tab)

Set aside an afternoon.

I think that there is a thread on the forum dealing with this...so try a search.

Edit: Here is some discussion and a diagram FWIW:

Good luck

Thank one Iota

1. No I don't have a Rave Manual (just have the Haynes) maybe its time to invest in one
2. Riviter and rivets no problem
3. May have access to welder........but is there a modified L?R part to counter this breakage? Or a likely cost for a new one?

A weekend job it is then! Had nothing planned anyway!!

Hi Jason,

Not sure whether there is an improved version or not (someone here might know)..but a new or second hand one is always an option. Where are you located? In NSW Land Vehicle Spares would be a good place to start. (see Recommended Suppliers section of the Forum)

Certainly the original was flawed due to the folding process weakening the tab. I haven't had a problem with the welded one after 2 years of use. It might even be stronger than the original.

(Don't forget that the RAVE is available from the AULRO shop.)

Not trying to be a wise guy here, but there will be a modified part once you point your welder at it, and done properly your bum will be dragging on the road before it fails again. Had the same problem about 40,000km ago and it has been fine since.

Thanks Wiseguy

Not sure why you specifically mentioned by bum in your post, but I'll leave that well alone

Looks like welding is the go then

Thanks again
