Hi D3 owners,

As a D2 TD5 owner (2000 model purchased new) who is considering upgrade to D3 TDV6, I'd like to find out the 'Real World' economy of TDV6 around town & on highway.

I'd also like to find out any design bugs that have surfaced so far with this model. After being bitten with dreaded ' leaky injector harness' twice, and ABS modulator + sensor harness faults, I want to do my homework before buying a TDV6.

Cheers...Bruiser;)

Hi bruiser69, my wife has had her D3 for 2 and half years now and although we do both city and highway driving, I can’t give you any idea of the ratio between to two but it’s got over 50k on the clock and has averaged 14.2l/100kms.

As to problems, this vehicle is proving to be one of the most reliable we have ever had.

The TDV6 is a great improvement on the TD5. There have been no constant problems with the engine; a couple major failures that have been posted on disco3.co.uk site DISCO3.CO.UK - Index (http://www.disco3.co.uk/forum/) .
Most issues make been electronics related and have been solved on later builds. Ball joints and steering rack are weak points but new parts on later models have been fixed.
My dealer (Alto) has been very good at replacing and fixing under warranty
Have a look on the site. If buying second hand make sure the enhancement program has been done and software is up to date.

Do a search on the site for "engine fault" :

The wife drives the HSE all week for work in city traffic and gets a constant 11.3l/100 and the best on highway figure I got was driving to Robe from Melb 9 l/100. Worst 12.9l/100 towing camper trailer to Pambula.
Had a V8 100 series crusier and people ask me what the D3 is like and I tell about the same as a 300series cruiser. Which Toyota hasn't built yet. The D3 is that far ahead of the rest, great drivers car. It's only my real world opinion.

G'day Bruiser,

I have had my TDV6 for 13 months with 43000km on the clock. We have just moved upto the NT from VIC so our fuel usage has increased a little bit due to the warmer weather. My figures around town are about 11.5 l/100km. On the highways up here we can do 140 and even at that speed I am getting just over 10. Towing my 1.6 ton boat I get about 16 l/100km. All up we are absolutely rapped with the Disco 3. Of interest was that I have just had a snorkel fitted, when I drove home after getting the snorkel installed down in Vic(it was a cold night) I managed to average 7.8 l/100km for a two hour trip. I am not sure if it was the colder air or the effect of the snorkel. I haven't had anything near that since, the car was lightly loaded with only me in it. Overall all though it is an excellent car and nothing has gone wrong with it.

Cheers
Steve

I've had mine since April and I'm getting 9.5Km/l on a 110 Km round trip daily with about 1/2 hour urban and 1/2 hour highway at 100Km/h. On a trip it will do below 9 but it does increase once you start travelling at more than 100Km/H.
And I love it !, much better than my TD5.

Tote

Hi Bruiser, sorry mate, I meant to put in my earlier post that my wife’s D3 is a V6 and that the TDV6 would get a lot better consumption but was in too much of a hurry.

Anyway you now have a number of posts from TDV6 owners.

Cheers

Hi,
Had my TDV6 nearly 3 years, 92000km. TDV6 is far, far, far better than the TD5. Get around 11 to 12l/100km around town. Around 9 some times 8 if i take it easy on highway trips, just me, no load. I get 13l/100km towing a 16.5Ft 1.7t Caravan. And the best part, around 19l/100km in Low range out in the bush in the very rough stuff or in soft sand up the beach. Have had absolutly no problems at all with the Engine or Gearbox (6sp Auto). Had a few minor electrical/computer problems and early air suspension problems, but all that is fixed and had no problems in a very long while. Any issues have only been minor niggly little things, nothing to stop me getting home. Get one, you will wear the permagrin.
D3 owners only know what that is.

Wow 7.8L/100K out of a 2.4 tonne 4WD would have to be a record!
Do you think the snorkel was responsible? The ram effect of a properly designed snorkel at highway speed (as well as the cold denser air) would have to help engine breathe better & less backpressure from turbocharger.

Can anyone expand on this? Anything that helps economy when diesel is approaching the price of beer! has to be investigated. PS I brew my own beer(pretty good) & maybe I should brew my own diesel.

Cheers..Bruiser:)
