Guys,
I recently had a service on my 2001 V6 Freelander to be told that the rubber boot that covers the universal joint where the front drive shaft meets the axle has worn. My mechanic (whom I do trust) told me that this "high speed boot" as he called it, cannot be purchased separately and I will need to replace the entire front drive shaft at a cost of some $700.
My question is this: Can I infact purchase this boot as a spare part, and if so, from who or is my only hope to try and locate the part from a wrecker??
Any advice is much appreciated....
Cheers.

Dunno if this is the same, but back when I owned a Subaru L wagon they used to say that about CV joint boots. From what one mechanic later explained, once the boot is worn through the CV joint is on its way out. The boots were replaceable, but it was only a stopgap thing, the CV was going to need replacing soon.
Cheers

I assume your are talking about a outer CV boot - I do not know if the boot can be purchased seperately but I have bought a new cheap outer CV complete on e-bay for about $60 which has the boot on it.
Also check here, as you might find what you are after British Four Wheel Drive - Land Rover & Range Rover Parts Specialist :: FREELANDER :: AXLE (http://www.british4wd.com/xcart/home.php?cat=199)
In any case - you can buy the outer CV and do not have to get a complete drive shaft.
I think you have been told porkies - and mechanics cannot understand why we don't believe us.

From MicroCat:
TDR100750, Kit, Drive Shaft Boot Repair, Outer (old price was $64)
The inner one could be:
TDR100710 - Kit, Drive Shaft Boot Repair (Old price was $140)
or
TDR500210 - Kit, Drive Shaft Boot Repair
They changed in 2001 so I'd really need your VIN

the high speed boot as hes calling it is available in a variety of specs and configurations.
you dont "need" a genuine one if you can get its lenghts and diameters you should be able to get one from a CV specialist.
(its how I got them for the missus astra.)
