View Full Version : RRC brake upgrade

Has anyone upgraded to 110 front brake calipers on a RRC (86 model)?

Do the calipers mount on the RRC swivel housings or are the bolt hole centres different?

If not,do the 110 swivel housings swap over?

Do the stub axles bolt up without machining the swivel housing?

Having the larger caliper pistons and pads, which rotors do you use?

I will be using a dual diaphram booster from a disco and a 2 port master cylinder from a 110.

Cheers Eric.

Watching this with interest, but I believe solid rotors are the best for the type of off road we do.

Yes I've done it, two years worth of testing and still highly recommended.:)

Bolt hole centres are the same, but bolt size changed along the line somewhere by about 1mm. I had some filing to do on my caliper mount ears to make them fit, then they bolted right on.

I'm using the RRC master cylinder. There's no need to swap it unless it's worn out.
I switched to vented front rotors at the same time.

Dougal,
Are you using RRC rotors still, although vented ones?
Is there any difference between 110 and RRC rotors, such as thickness, diameter or offset?
Cheers Eric.

I know RRC and 110 stubs are swapable tho u need to use the corect bush for the CV if it was me id be using the whole RRC swivel ball with bearings top and bottom insted of the ralko bush on the 110 that way ya just unbolt the ball from the housing and swap em over :D:D:D

Disco/defender/rrc rotors are all the same. I got my rotors from supercheap locally due to shipping costs and got the callipers from paddock spares.

OK,I measured up and trial fitted some 110 calipers to both an 86 and 81
RRC.They did bolt straight on but the 110 uses M12 bolts as opposed to the RRC's using 7/16" UNF which measure about 11mm.To get around the caliper being a loose fit on the bolts you could make up some sleeves, that fit between the bolt and caliper.Or you could drill and helicoil the swivel housing lugs to M12,but there's no going back to standard then. The only other thing is the bracket which supports the flexible brake lines needs to be trimmed substantially to clear the larger caliper, and of course make a new hard pipe from caliper to flexible line(now only a single line).
Cheers Eric.

Don't bother.
All bolts have clearance and the 1mm possible difference in caliper location causes no problems.
Mine were originally on an 85 RRC axle with 7/16" bolts, with 12mm holes it worked fine. Now they're on a 97 disco axle (same vehicle) with 12mm bolts and I had to drill the holes to 1/2" (12.7mm) to fit.

Anyone know if defender rear calipers fit a RRC rear axle housing?

I recall seeing a website where someone had done that. I think there was a spacer involved to sort out the sideways alignment.
Of course if you want more braking at the rear with stock brakes, simply bypass the pressure reducing valve.

Finally had time to work on the brakes again, work keeps getting in the way.Just fitted 110 calipers to the front and what a difference:o It locks up
the front wheels at close to the same time as the rears. Before there was no chance of locking up any brakes. So as it stands I'm running:
110 front calipers with bendix 4wd pads
RRC rear calipers with bendix standard pads
Disco 4 port master cylinder-both front outlets to the front,1 rear outlet to
the rear and the other rear outlet blocked off.(use a 3 port master cyl
instead.)
No proportioning valve anymore either.
Cheers Eric.

What size tyres have you got on them? Thinking about changing mine when 35s go on if they work well.:)

Only been testing on road with 235/85/16's which are about 32's.I'll let you know after this weekend how they go with 35's.

Dave,thanks again mate.
Cheers Eric.

After testing on the weekend with 35's I'm very happy with the brakes, they now hold comfortably on very steep hills where as before you'd have both feet on the pedal pushing as hard as possible.Stopping is still very good, only marginally worse than with the 32's.
Cheers Eric.
