No I'm not having flashbacks of the Luftwaffe blitzing the old dart, probably due to the fact I'm not that old. In fact this thread has absolutely nothing to do with zee Zermans and the war we do not mention. Here's the story, I am going for an extended drive and will be away from all amenities, I've got to carry a few Jerrycans for fuel. Personal preference is to keep these as low as possible to keep the CG low on the County, however roof mounting them seems to be my only option at this present time.

We're not going mental so it should be OK, I still don't like the idea of having up to 80kg of fluid mounted on the roof rack of the County.

I know to mount it to the front of the rack but which way? Horizontally with the pourer facing up? Or completely horizontal to keep them as low as possible?

Apart from the Dawg who else has done this, it seems to be a popular way for long range expediton vehicles to carry there fuel.

Dobbo,

Send a PM to 1984V8110 I know he and his brother have both done this. Most recently I think was to his County. Just tell him that I suggested you contact him, he doesn't post much but does read the forum a lot.

Cheers
Derek

Jerry's what? It's the possessive so I need to know what Jerry owns and why it is above you.

Dobbo, back in the early 90's we used to carry those dreded Huns on the rack on the rangie...I think I fitted 5 or 6 up there, carried on the front of the rack on there edge with the spouts uppermost, the only down side was we cracked the A pilers rather badley...(fixed and then strengthend)
Twas ok in the bush or slow dirt roads but a bitch with body roll at any speed.

Lay em flat, as long as you fill them correctly it won't matter. I'd suggest some slim rubber to act as a cushion as they can wear through from rubbing.
But I don't think 4 would fit side by side across the County

Roof is a good spot if you don't want a long range tank dragging your ass down..plus the roof prevents ingress of water contamination:D:D:D

What about 10ltr plastic Jerry cans instead of the metal 20ltr ones.

I've carried two on the rack "spout up" for thousands of kms with no probs and you dont notice them, it probably depends more on the strength of your roof rack.
