Rear left door

A little while ago I busted off the outside handle to the left rear door. Problem is I have kiddie's lock on it. Anyone got any good ideas how to open the door so I can replace the handle???

now that is a tough one! can't open the door, can't easily take the door skin off. might be a case of fising around to try and get the mechanism to unlatch!!

Unscrewing the hinges won't solve your problem as the door latch is of the burst open safe type. Would work on a series but not a Defender.

Although I haven't tried it, I would suggest removeing the internal door handle, wiper handle (with the window in the up position) and the lift up lever surround and try to pry the top of the liner away from the frame to expose the mechanism and try to jig the levers that operate from the external handle. If you can get the nearside rear seat out this would give heaps more room. Removing the seat may even give you enough room to flick the child lock lever.

Common sensicle and a good way of doing it..... the sort of answer a Bush Defender owner would come up with..well done;)

once you gottem off you will need anther pair of hands while you tackle the latch

As I stated previously this will not work on a d Defender as the latches are designed to prevent the door from bursting open. The latches do this by clamping around the peg in the door frame. If you undo the hinges the door will still be stuck on the latch. Series trucks that have a latch similar to a household doors (pre burst protection) can be removed by removing the hinges.

Point taken but wouldn't you then be able to access the latch/peg and then unscrew that also?
If so, you would then have easy access to the whole door catch system and be able to rectify the problem.

Here are same pics of the rear left door.

In a couple of the pics I have rested a AAA battery on the bottom piece of the door latch/inset.

The child lock can be switched from the inside by lifting up the thing that I'm pointing at.

I reckon maybe just drill a little hole in the door card, stick a screwdriver in and wiggle.
