Is there a source for this info, or a reason behind the move?

He may be disliked, but thats what gets the network its viewers.

Sam Newman ordered off TV indefinitely

29th May 2008, 6:45 WST

AFL Footy Show star Sam Newman has been stood down from television indefinitely, after the Nine Network ordered him to take an extended break and seek counselling.

The move comes eight weeks after Newman groped a lingerie-clad mannequin after stapling a picture of The Age newspaper's chief football writer Caroline Wilson to its head, and 12 weeks after he had life-saving prostate surgery.

News Limited newspapers reported on Thursday that Newman had accepted the decision and would not appear on the Footy Show on Thursday.

Jeffrey Browne, the managing director of GTV-9, on Wednesday stood Newman down indefinitely, saying the 62-year-old star should not have been allowed back to work so soon after surgery to remove his cancerous prostate, News Limited reported.

"In order to allow Sam to return to full health without the stress of having to perform on live television each week, I have directed him to take a break from The Footy Show," Mr Browne told News Limited.

"As a component of this rehabilitation, I have arranged for Sam to undergo counselling to address, with professional assistance, the behaviour and issues that have attended what I now believe to be his premature return to the program."

When asked when Newman would return, Mr Browne said: "This is not about time. It is about the result. Once Sam has had the opportunity to have the time off he always should have had off, and once I am fully satisfied he has fully recovered, he will be back."

Mr Browne told Nine's Melbourne staff that Newman was still suffering from "underlying emotional issues" after his life-threatening illness, News Limited reported.

Female viewers have deserted the program because of a series of incidents in the wake of the mannequin scandal on April 3, which angered many including some AFL executives and a group of women from top levels of football who wrote a letter of complaint to Nine chief executive David Gyngell.

Either the network is interested in bringing him back after healing, or they are cowardly hiding behind his prostate to get rid of him...

However I find that the Poll that thewest.com.au is conducting...
thewest.com.au/blogs Blog Archive ENTERTAINMENT BLOG: Has this neanderthal finally got his comeuppance? (http://blogs.thewest.com.au/general/entertainment-blog-has-this-neanderthal-finally-got-his-comeuppance/)

is somewhat disgusting and disrespectful. You may argue whether he is genuinely like this, or whether his paycheck dictates his attitudes, but he is still human.

Recently, his comments about AFL footy on the Footy Show have deteriorate enough for him to be regarded as expendable. He seems to have moved into the 'Grumpy Old Man' category. It's a shame as I loved his cheeky mucking around in the earlier days. :(

Now...who will replace him??????

I won't miss him for one. He was entertaining once, but it's time for him to retire - truly.
It'll take a while for him to adjust to life in the real world.

I watch this crap (I choose my words carefully) only for the interaction between Crawford and Newman, it's brilliant 'cos there both trying to give it to each other and its not entirely scripted.

The whole bunch are loosers, but it is entertaining for the first half hour. After that I get bored.

Crawford could make a replacement, but the enforced rest will probably tame Newman down a peg, but only one peg is all that's needed IMHO before he makes a return.

Exercise your right, turn to a different channel. After all its not the BBC and you're not paying for the priviledge to watch this as with a licence fee per the UK.

Now don't dare to be controversial fellas.:o

Surely, no one here would side with Sammy - it just goes against the flow.

Jeez, if a bloke even suggested he found Sammy's jokes/style was OK/funny... well that is akin to hanging yourself.

Oh, that's right.... he has made a "name' for himself. The man must be a goose. Gotta be. Naa, he must be.

Drives a 'Gini. Gotta a bloody big boat. Probably cracked more chicks than you've dreamt about. Doesn't work - just talks and does an act on the idiot box..... hang-on ......... that could be dozens of Actors, Rock-stars... and bloody journalists. Could also be a lot of Landy Drivers who reckon their pretty cool because they drive a DefdisRover, make more than $50K p/a and their wife is blonde.

It looks like I'm defending him. I'm not. Just amused at the mentality of the Sheep. Double-dog dare you to go against the Sheep. Go oooonnnnn.....it's easy.... remember you did that when you bought a Landie and not a Toyota......remember.....you can do it.

Take a couple of facts... the bloke played 300 games plus in an era when men were men and footy was tough. Yeah I know it is different now but cop a few smacks in the mouth, a whack in the kidneys, a knee in the back and then get up and kick a few goals. And you don't get to come off, have a rest and a physio rub and back on again for ten minutes.

You can have an opinion these days.....as long as it is the right opinion. Give me a bloke who expresses his opinion than a pansy who just endorses everyone else's opinion. Doesn't mean I have to listen to the opinion or agree with it.

Don't know how I'm going to get across the message that I'm not defending this bloke......... rather I'm questioning the propensity of blokes having a crack at someone........because everyone else is and they simply do not want to be seen as different.

Lets see if people can put this together as I dont know if I can explain my self on here but here is a series of word/coments that explains where Sam came from, what he did and how he got there.

GGS (Geelong Grama School(sp? maybe I should have gone))
Eddie Mcquire (Mr Football)
Eddie McQuire (Mr Football)

Good Business sense or help from Eddie McQuire (Mr Football)
I owned a Landcruiser before the Disco
Im not affraid of saying it like it is.

I also think that Eddie McQuire (Mr Football) is not worthy of the same O2 that I use.

Football is just not that important in the grand scheme of things....:wasntme:

Why would i say anything good about the bloke when I think he is a dead set idiot ? All he does is makes jokes at other peoples expense ...... And it has been seen that he can give it but not take it ..... Very funny to see someone giving it back to Sammy cos he gets very uptight and red in the face on camera . And big deal if he has played 300 games for geelong wooohoooo yeeeehaaa lets chuck a party .... NOT!!!! ...... It does not give the bloke the right to be the worlds biggest clown . Plenty of others have played when footy was footy and they don't act like fools . If it wasn't for Eddie he would be at centrelink ;).

And i'm no sheep .... i'll say what i want when i want and no one will change what i think ;).

In defence of Sam, I don't watch the Footy Show as not a fan of hit, giggle, giggle or what is known as AFL, however used to watch the league version. Over the years though have seen Newman on various things, and when it comes to humour at other peoples expense, well that is the guts of a lot of comedy. Personally I find a lot of it funny. Cutting through whether one likes him or not, one doesn't stay on TV for 14 yrs, he has been successful in what he does, whether you love or hate him. Everything now has become so PC, so clean, so afraid to offend. Are some of the things he has said anymore distasteful than any other person in that capacity? I think Kyle Sandiland is a complete knob, but very much a part of it is part of the "image", and like anything else these days, if you don't like it, don't make a choice to become a part of it. One person's humour is another person's disgust and such is life,

Regards

Stevo

Well I had a look last night....BORING..!!!

Billy Brownless did his best but after 20 mins I couldnt watch any more.
Garry Lyon is a sook, always
Brawshaw is half decent but is clearly just carving out a career, he was better on radio
Marmalade has never said anything funny, ever

The only time it's worth watching is when Newman plays up and the rest come to light by feeding off his stupid comments and actions.

Bring back Newman and whoever wants to watch can have a bit of a giggle and not worry for an hour or so about all the bull crap pollitical correctness being forced on us.

This show will not ever make any difference to the credibility of anyone they pick on... ever.... 'cos its only a joke show, thats all, just a Thursday night circus for a bit of mild amusement.

Couldn't agree more Simon,

I think that people take themselves to seriously sometimes. i hate Big Brother, i can't stand Kyle SANDLANDS, I hate some of the ABC journos, I hate lots of stuff, so guess what, i don't watch, listen or look at it, no problems for me then. Don't know any of them personally so i try and keep it civil .... but i respect the rights of people that do enjoy the things i don't and good luck to them, like I said, I don't listen to them so i have no dramas really, just turn it off .......:o:o:o

How many of you bokes have actually met the guy. When he was residing in Brighton (VIC) he lived next door to a mate that i used to do a lot of bike riding with, met Sammy numerous times and found him to be a bloody ripper of a bloke. Totally different than what you see on TV and you would travel a fair distance in your landy to find a more genuine fella.:D:D

Anyway, I'll admit some of his stuff is a bit over the top, but hey, it's just a TV show and that's the character that he plays on the show. I still laugh at most of his antics and if he is pulled froim the show then so be it, all it will mean is the demise of the show.

Guess I'll just have to read more of Andrew BOLT's articles.:D:D:D

There's my one cent worth, like it or hate it that's me .......:twisted::twisted::twisted:
