What are these bits, then? Part I

I was puzzling over the function of two attachments on the rear of my newly-acquired S3 project vehicle.
(See attached photos.)
I think they are top and bottom brackets for a shovel. Can anyone confirm?

Certainly look that way. They are home-made jobs though (as I'm sure you know).

Certainly looks like shovel holders - although i have never seen anything quite like them.
