Hi all,
I'm looking for information on changing hydraulic lifters on a 95 disco 3.9.

1/ How easy is it to do (myself)

2/ What am I looking at as far as parts needed and rough cost.

3/ How much for a mechanic to do it including parts.

Any help or advice would be appreciated.

Thanks Jeff

Hi Jeff
1/ Very easy to do (if you have done it before)
2/ Rocker cover gasket x2 .. Valley gasket ... Lifters x16 ... $400???
3/ Dont know .. cause i do it all myself :)

Question ... Why are you changing lifters? as there are other items that have to be checked. ;) "Just changing lifters" may result in other problems ;)

this has a familiar ring to it, there is a thread on this already.
my question to jeff, is,
why do you want to change the lifters?
if they are a bit clattery on startup from cold, then the engine may well need a camshaft also - this seems to be a common problem with the earlier v8's [although i have not seen it]
my v8 clatters a bit on start, but very briefly, and the reason is that i run heavier oil. it has no effect on the operation of the engine, and the secret is to start the engine at idle and don't rev it until the oil is up there.
if you are thinking that the lifters are worn to a stage that they need changing, then look at the camshaft when you pull them out. you can do that by using a torch and rotating the engine. you may need to wash the oil off the camshaft lobes first, to see the condition of the lobes.
