Hi
measured my D1 today. The damn thing leans to the drivers side and is quite obvious when you stand behind it a few yards and look at it.
Took a tape to it and measured it and found that the drivers side is definately 30mm lower than the passenger side, at both the front and rear.
has anyone else had this problem?
I had a look at the recently fitted coils and they still had their original stickers on them and all the coils are in the right corners
I didnt think that the 'tolerance' would be that far out from the factory.
I am thinking of fitting 30mm spacers to the front and rear drivers side and that should level it out ;)

Yeah I don't think that this is uncommon with Discos and Rangies. I think they're just heavy on that side or something.

That's so that on a normally cambered road, you sit level.:p

but it is pretty obvious when you look at the car. not all cars have that much lean on them, when you look at other cars closely, they are level. I even measured our 'road car' and it was level :(

Shorty
mines the same, new springs fitted (not quite as bad....)
Maybe its a landrover thing? Other 4wdrivers believe we are different!
We may have one eyeball 30mm lower than the other:eek:
Sorry, forgot i have to act my age..... not my engine capacity

My first two series s'wagons and my '85 Rangie all leant to the right about an inch. At the time I always assumed they were mean to.:D

oh ok, seems thats the way they are
second question, if I 'straighten' the bloody thing up, it can't do any harm can it??? maybe I can have the only 'straight' disco in Oz

I'm not so sure.
I think I recall a road test of a Jeep about 20 or 30 years ago where the journalist complained bitterly about the fact that the vehicle still had a US suspension setup to suit driving on the right hand side of the road and was a real pain to drive on the left.
On the other hand maybe all it needed was wheel alignment.
There must be someone here who actually knows about these things who could set you straight. (No pun intended).

first check your sway bar ends......
the rear bracket to the chassis on mine, copped a fair whack which then allowed the little arm that connects at the diff end to invert. Was ok until it articulated beyond a certain point and then it'd invert. It caused a definite lean. Was a PITA to get back too. I've had the rear bracket massaged :bangin:back into shape and rewelded.
Sorry I don't know all the correct terms:whistling:
(when inverted the rear door would foul slightly on the bumper also)

I know you said you put the springs in all the right corners, but ya never no you might have put the drivers side springs on the passengers side.
Because i think the drivers side coils are a bit higher than the passengers side.

Mine has this prob. Another one of the reasons I was thinking of doing the lift and it seems that even though installing new springs the problem still might be there. Was thinking of doing the spacer thing too even with a 2" lift

Dad just bought a 97 Laredo. It was pulling left very strongly. We checked the wheelbase and found it very short on the LHS, the lower arms on the front diff have eccentric cams but even at full adjustment we only managed to get the wheel base dead even we couldn't get any bias to the right. The car may well be bent tho.
A lower ride height one side will have little affect but if anything will make it pull the other direction as due to the arc the wheel travels it will be a smidge shorter wheel base on the taller side.

I'm sure they come from the factory level,,,
I'm also sure there are 4 different springs,,
The right hand side front will be biggest because thats where the most weight is, battery, driver,,
If yours leans,,
the springs have sagged,,
or been incorrectly fitted,

When I got the spring lift for my Disco they told me that the factory springs always lean to the drivers side and that King Springs have been made taller on that side to compensate for it. So with the King Springs, they have Left and Right Springs.

Shorty, next time you pop around we can measure the spring height and check that the springs are in the right side.
You can always remove the body lift blocks on the right side  :p :wasntme:

dont worry guys, I have bought some 30mm coil spring spacers for the drivers side. If the springs are in the wrong side, it just means I got an extra 30mm lift ;)

it just needed a 30mm coil spacer in the front drivers side corner, now its level (well, within 5mm which is good enough for me)
heres a pic
funny how it was lower 30mm both front and rear on the drivers side and only needed a front spacer to level it out

I wasnt sure how to measure the level from front to rear so it is a visual judgement that way.
I have been referring to it's 'levelness' from side to side. I just measured it at each wheel from the ground to the wheel arch directly over the centre of the wheel and compared the back end on each side and the front at each side.
I was advised to test it by jacking one wheel up 30mm before I put any spacers in and then I measured it all the way around and found that if I just put the front one in then it would be fixed. Lucky I didnt start by putting the back on in without testing it
I got the coil spacer off ebay but had to buy a pair so now I have a spare. Originally I thought I needed 2, one at the front and one at the rear but as it turned out I only needed one.
You can buy them individually from here

he has them in 20mm or 30mmsizes
it took me about 45 minutes to fit the front one. The hardest part I had was compresing the coil an extra 30mm to fit the spacer in but with some healthy swearing and burred knuckles, I got it in ;)

I have recently got my standard springs replaced with Lovells springs and Bilsteins shockies. Now measuring from the top of the wheel arch to the ground the distances are Front drivers 830, passenger 795. Rear drivers side 820 passenger 790.
Are these heights within the allowed limits as it does have a lean on it or should a spacer be added?

thats odd, yours is lower on the passenger side whereas mine was lower on the drivers side, but the difference in spring manufacturers would explain that :(
yours is about 30mm lower and so was mine. To see where yours is going wrong, try jacking the front passenger side wheel up about 30mm and then re-measure all the guards. I found that just by jacking the one wheel up, it leveled the whole truck front and rear then I just put the spacer in that coil, easy peasy :D
