I'm trying to identify my Series II. Some photos:

This plate is on the upper left firewall in the engine bay. It reads "5-6-59, E, 21"

The number on the engine near the exhaust manifold reads "270562" I think

It has these cups around the rear lights

Vertically arranged front lights

Sills like this and one petrol tank

And this is the interior

The body is in pretty bad shape, but the engine runs like a dream :)

The fleet

Where would I find a chassis number? I've been trying to blow the mud and oil off from underneath all morning, and still no joy finding any other clues. Whatever model it is I know I'm in for a lot of work restoring it

Thanks for any help

G'day Justin,
Looks like a ripper.
I reckon its an early S11 (Somewhere between 58-61 - Similar to mine) with "wind out" vents. The ID plate on firewall is missing. The chassis number should be stamped on the chassis just forward of the driver side rear wheel. The tail lights look ex mil to me. Steering wheel is later (S3?). That's about exhausted my knowledge - Uncle Ho,Diana and others will be along soon to help.
Love the shot of the Disco and trailer. (You have a very similar fleet to mine.)
What's your plans?

Looks like it is in pretty good condition for its age. Also looks like it may be an early military model. Maybe ask in the REMLR section.

The lower lights on the front (indicators) look non-standard. looks like it has a 2.25P with holden (stromberg) carby?

Thanks guys,

I've just been out scraping around trying to find the number again. Where on the chassis is the number? outside, inside, under, etc? and how far forward of the rear wheel?

May have given you a bum steer on that number location - standby I'm checking my manuals

Chassis number should be on the vertical face of the LH rear spring hanger above the shackle - you may need to strip off all the paint.

It should also be on a plate on the inside of the firewall, directly in front of the gear lever, and below the instruments. But since this is held on by selftappers, it may well have been removed, but will also be hidden by any lining.

The number you show on the head is a casting number. The engine number is just to the left of the exhaust manifold, on the sloping bit of the block, immediately adjoining the join to the timing case, in other words, just out of your picture.

The tail light protectors are military, but this does not mean the vehicle is necessarily - they have been available aftermarket. Same goes for the lights. The sills are readily removed on any Series 2/2a/3 Landrover, so their absence means nothing.

I agree with the others, although for some reason I could not see the interior photos. Series 2 (not 2a), probably 59 if the plate you have found means anything.

OK from my parts catalogue " left, rear section of the chassis above the spring shackle." (As you probably gathered I haven't found mine yet - still have the iD plate).

Geez I wasn't even close:mad:

G'day All, From the pix it's a Series 2 Command recon car, date into service 5/6/1959 E (eastern comm) 21 miles on the speedo when delivered.
The chassis number should be found on the upper part of the lhs rear shackle plate (attached to the chassis), the engine is on the vertical face of the block just below the exhaust manifold for No 1 cyl.
It would appear that it has had a steering box replacement somewhere in it's life as the steering wheel/column are later models, and some other things added by P.owners, anyway have fun with it cheers mate Dennis:wasntme:

G'day All, Just out of curiosity was this the $100.00 Land Rover from ebay (Gloucester)??? cheers Dennis:wasntme:
PS After looking at the pix again the Nomenclature plate is located in the lhs parcel tray, it's an aluminium plate held on by 4 2BA pan head screws, this plate will have the chassis number on it. To remove paint use a rag with some brake fluid on it, it will also have the census number should be 6005, methinks you have the genuine article, but only after finding the chassis number on the chassis that will confirm it and a quick check thru REMLR for the chassis<> ARN.

Well spotted! - Treads - remove that plate and carefully clean/strip the paint off.

Treads,
well done, welcome to the "pack" REMLR application/membership is free and downloadable (check it out!)

I see that you have a photo of the engine number, and by looking at it you
can see that that particular fleet is obviously fitted with the self lubricating chassis system......:D

seriously though the series 2 was the first model brought in to service in the aussie army in any numbers and set the pace for a continuing service history up to and including today...just that alone should make it worth fixing!.
(refer history s2 on remlr!) (including some when new delivery photos!!)

and secondly olive drab is an easier paint finish to achieve!!

cheers

G'day Treads :)

That's a nice complete early Series 2 Command Reconnaissance,(census 6005) those cups are the standard rear lamp protective cups fitted or retrofitted to all military Series 2/2a Landrovers, the rear light lens are the correct original type and those lens are still available through specialist outlets like KB Classic Parts in Qld, the left front is the original blinker light (getting rare now) and the front parker lamp was a Lucas round one with a chrome ring and 2 screws same as the blinker but with a flatish glass lens:),this vehicle may not have been fitted with a brush (bull) bar of military design but that one looks like a homemade post service build, it appears to be fitted with an Alternator which is Negative Earth, these vehicles were originally built as Positive Earth so if the instrument wires haven't been changed over the guages will read incorrectly, all is easily repairable;) all-in-all you have got yourself a nice complete historic vehicle, if you are in the area of Dinty check out his Command Recon from the same contract (I think):) It would have been originally painted Deep Bronze Olive but would have been overpainted with Lusterless Olive Drab.

cheers
