Trailcart: World's First Pedal-Powered 4WD Off-Road Vehicle
http://gizmodo.com/assets/resources/2008/06/Trailcart.jpgIt seems like something that would have been invented before, and by red-blooded Americans for whom off-roading is a way of life, but the Trailcart, according to TreeHugger, is the world's "first pedal-powered four-wheel-drive off-road vehicle," and it was invented by a clever German fellow named Frank Fraune.

From a technical point of view, the Trailcart is like a hybrid mountain bike and four wheeler. It's got permanent four-wheel-drive and is powered by roughly 290Nm of torque. In terms of conquering rockey terrain, it has 400mm of axle displacement. TreeHugger adds that it has a "double-action mechanical hydraulic braking system" and a Shimano Nexus 8 shifter coopted from the cycling world. The developers are trying to keep the weight at 50kg or less, in order to be transportable on automobile bike racks.
At the moment Trailcart is getting some serious investment from some heavy hitters, including Land Rover, and speaking of Land Rover, the little four-wheeler is involved in testing at Land Rover's "obstacle park" in Wülfrath, Germany. I really really want to try one of these out. There's no word on how much exertion is required to get that thing really moving, but if it takes any kind of physical strain at all, chances are it'll never make it to America.

I'm sure you could make a trailer for it :)

now that would be fun!!!

Needs a different seat though, I think that one would be too easy to come out of.

Got to hate it when you have similar ideas floating in the back of your mind and someone beats you to it. It looks like fun, but would still prefer my moutain bike at this point.

i wonder what its wading depth is?

looks kind of pointless to me.
Heavier than a MB - less agile, can't go on narrow trails, bumpier ride too i'd guess since you have 4 wheels to hit bumps.
less maneuverable
not as transportable
can't see how its as efficient mechanically.
Yes you can put two wheels up a bank - but can do that on a MB anyway.
can't carry passengers.

might be fun if you can drift it on dirt or mud

Hope Land Rover doesn't invest much in it.

Will the next step be a transfer case and a winch ?

Have to say I agree. Give me my freeride bike with 6"/8" of suspension travel any day. I would hate to take that thing over a jump!!! :o

The MTB also takes up a lot less space in the landy than that would.

Comes as a standard accessory with a Landcruiser.

Useful for "self recovery"

Simply attach the 80 Metre snatch strap and start peddling.
