Strange Vibration - Auto Maybe?

I've seached the archives, but can't find any similar symptons to what I am experiencing.

Vehicle D2, TD5 with Auto (ZF4HP22E I assume)

Lately I have been experiencing a slight vibration when backing off the accelerator. The vibration feels like driving over a small ripple strip. I feel like there is another vibration creeping in lately also if sitting at at the lights and I leave it it drive,where as if I put in neutral while stationary that vibration goes away.

It doesn't happen all the time, but what started about a week ago as happening on odd occasions is becoming progressivly regular.

Gear changes appear to be happening at the right time. I cannot find the exhaust contacting the body or engine mountings that need changing (recent vibation threads). So the above is leading me to believe it may be the Auto.

I have a couple of questions

Has anyone else had these vibrations and does it seem feasable the transmission is at fault.

Does anyone know someone good with ZF boxes in Perth?

Engine mounts, engine mounts, engine mounts.


I had a post up recently with exactly the same symptoms. This happens from around the 90000km mark or earlier if you do a lot of towing. The engine mounts start to compress and loose there suppleness hence the vibes.

If you are going to fit them yourself you can trim the top stud by around 8mm this means you dont have to jack up the engine as much to get them in. This reduces the chance of breaking plugs etc if you lift it too high.

There has been a bit on D2 TD5 engine mounts recentley.Worth finding JustinCs and others posts on how to detect stuffed ones.
NOT A CHEAP FIX but cheaper than a trans rebuild that isnt required!!!!

Guys I have looked at the Engine mountings as per recent threads. They don't appear to have collapsed.

I will check them out again, as that will be cheaper than the Auto problems I feel it may be.

Mate you cant see squat just looking at them in situe.Trust me on this one. When you pull them out and sit it next to a new mount, you can see they have collapsed into the outer steel housing. Your call though but I know where my moneys lying;)

Just over 150,000km

A guy at work is going to have a look tomorrow, BigDen from the forum, he is an ex mechanic. Usually another mate of mine would look at this for me but he is up the mines for another couple of weeks.

A new development tonight though. I drove home thinking yep you are probably right it does seem like the engine mounts, but when I got home something new happened.

When putting it into park I felt that vibration akin to a ripple strip and heard a small growl. So I moved the gear selector between park and neutral a few times and got the same thing for the first couple, then is was back to normal.

That to me did not seem to be the mountings.

Anyway I may have to get the Disco into Rovertech, unless Does anybody know if Richard (KIE4) is about.

Also check the transmission mounts, which are like smaller versions of the engine mounts.

I've replaced my engine mounts 3 times and gearbox mounts once, due to lots of serious offroading.... :angel:

Also check that your unijoints on your front driveshaft are good, if you drive a DII....

My D2 did this once, rumble on decelleration? Turned out to be loose drive train components. Can't remember which now.

Mine makes that growl,but only from cold in the morning.
Sorry,its not the same though,you havent got a crutch!!!
Its not a bad idea to have a good look at that front uni.
Even worth droping the shaft on the weekend and locking the CDL to see if it goes away.

G Phil i wished we could have gotten 150k out of our engine mounts, only done 79k and beeing told they are just about RS so after hols she will be going in to get them done

Ok I believe we have now identified what is causing the above.

The vibration I felt was creeping in and getting worse appears to have been the accoustic cover. The captive nut on the RH side had broken (the clip part). It must have happened the last time someone did it up and the bolt wasn't clamping the cover.

I am currently running without the cover and the vibration has gone.

Now the small, short sharp vibration when decelerating and moving the gear selector between N & P after driving a while (approx 15km), we have identified as the EGR solenoid on the RH side just below the coolant tank.

If you put your hand on it while someone else moves the gear selector you can feel it vibrate and hear a growl.

I am glad it isn't the auto or engine mounts either. Thanks everyone for their suggestions.

mines done 63k & recently had service at M.R.Auto& they recon they are just about stuffed:mad:

hasn't towed anything...you would think someone would make some decent after market ones:(

I ditched mine soon after I bought it Phil.
It hides too many sins and makes little or no sound difference!!!!
