View Full Version : Project 89 Blown away
Rangier Rover

It is another bloody range Rover build up. This one may have a twist hopefully.
It started life as a standard 89 Vogue with 3.5 EFI ZF auto and bloody Borg Warner VC. Anyway we have here, LRA 2.5" body lift, LRA XL flares, Eastern Creek 8" -25mm offset rims with 35's, 4.11CWPs, Maxi Drive front and rear lockers with axles, heavy duty Tie rod/Drag link/RTC Damper, some suspension, M90 supercharger (Was Rovercare's) came with Uni chip looking at using Delco with hall dizzy and Haltech E6GMX Management.(A bit of mix and matching to do here) Plan to make a start on this one this weekend after I get all the broken **** machinery out of my workshop:eek:

Carefull mate, there are threads on here about how WORTHLESS RRC's are, so if you spend more than $2 your over capitalising!
Seriuosly, I think Rover owners are their worst enemies! If we have an attitude that these beautifull machines are worthless, then other non-Rover people are going to think worse!
Side tracked a bit there, have fun with the build up, and of course, pics please or else it never happened ;)

IMHO it's the Discoveries that are a worthless bit of .....
Until the Discovery came along RRc's held their value fairly well. When the Disco came along (and the p38a) the price of RRc's fell through the floor. However compared to the RRc the Disco has performed very poorly. They need towing kits which were never required on the RRc, there were the disasterous design problems where the engine oil pump failed on the Td5, they have numerous chassis cracking problems and their value falls through the floor while your having lunch.
Compared to the Disco 1 and 2 the County and Defender are great value and they hold their value far better than their up-market sibling.
Rangier Rover, good onya with your '89 project, keep us all up to date on the progress.

Pics soon:D As far as over capitalising:eek: This is the best part of a RRC. If I trash this one I just buy anothery for stuff all and swap the goodies over;)
I say make people think they are worthless. More fore us:D

Diana I agree with you here:) But I think we might get into soup with the defer and disco owners:eek:
Most of them (Not all) and Rice Burner owners have never driven or owned a RRC let alone a modded one.:wasntme: Its the charm that does it:wub:

Funny - everyone I have asked about them has said to no end how good the RRC is - its the reason why I decided to keep it & do it up :)
Will be watching this close as I do my own as well

Thanks for intrest here. I need the inspiration to get this one done. Always helping others and not my self;) So at mid life time to be selfish and do my own big time. Was looking for a 94 LSE to build but none came up at right price in time so we are stuck with the 89 for now.::(. It's in good nick for age though.
As some of you know I have a modded 2 door and still restoring a 84 Ph2 RRC. Toooo many projects:eek: I must say the 2 door has been a good one.
Have been doing some midnight oiling to help clear the work shop for this one.
Problem is on a place this size with a fleet of over 50 inc machinery and hard operators stuff seems to break:eek: So work shop is trashed:(.

that sounds like a great project...just dont turn it into a ute...it suddenly becomes worthless....sorry had to say that
seriously, who cares if its a RRC, Disco or defer, they are all great and I reckon modifying them makes them even better.
Cant wait to see some pics and watch the progress :twobeers:

Got our share of series here.:o
$2500:eek: for Rangie with reco 3.5 and ZF:confused: Had it for 2 yrs and done heaps of long trips. Morton Isle etc. The Rangie just needs bigger feet now. To keep up with these new Toymotors and D3's:D;)
I've been looking for a 94 LSE but looks like the 89 is in the line of fire.
I'm finding a lot won't touch (or can't ) the Unichip. I can't get hold of the gear to do it at this stage. Unichip won't talk to public:( I'm not spending $300 P/hr on dyno runs 400km away:mad:as will be making 3 engine size changes:eek: 3.9 to 3.5 then to other.
I started the 14cux thread hoping for some leads on Unichip. but......
Not sure what you mean by people have wrong idea:confused: I don't care if people say thay are a POS;) Should see the faces when they out do the rivals:D.
All I want to do is stick a Blower on it with duel fuel, make run properly. As I said before it has to swim and do remote travel and not strand us.
Don't worry I won't toss the Uni Chip as I have a 4.4P76 2 door Rangie here that crying out for EFI.
I have come across the Haltech and Delco VN loom by chance. As a bloke could not be bothered to work out how to set it up and put a Chiped Delco back in his blown commy.
If I use a commodore fuel and Ignition can be repaired anywhare in Aus.
As Rovercare said if the EFI dies just chuck a points dizzy and coil on,flick to gas and drive away. So would be reliable either way.

94 RRC Vogue SE..... $7-8k
94 Disco $3-4k
both have same engine, same gearbox, same diffs, same chassis
one is lighter..... and cheaper....
Why.... they forgot to give it style looks and feel.... but as a Bush POS, who cares......

What about fuel economy and flexible fuels?
Supercharging is compatible with all types of fuels including flexible fuels, i.e. CNG (compressed natural gas), propane, etc. Fuel economy is not compromised, as described above in item #7, when utilizing the bypass system in conjunction with the supercharger. EPA (environmental protection agency) figures support this claim.

Made it back after bit over 2000kms travel. Wen't up to Cambera, Cooma,Jindarbyne, Perisha mountains, some of the National parks Tracks that we could get at, Checked out Snowy Hydro Eleco in Tumit area, Came back via Young. Was an awsome trip the old Rangie went well. Just a little underpowered on some hills in 4th gear with all our gear in it. Fuel 14 to 16L/100 kms. Was able to cruise on 110 kmh even in a head wind. Only problem I had was a hose clamp failed when I tried to tighten it cold when I noticed a small coolant leak. Should have known better and warmed it up 1st as hoses get hard in Alps:(. Had to cut hose and use zippy ties till I could get a new clamp.
Some Pics. :)

I have taken the plunge and organized some LRA Springs and Long travel kit to shove in as will have Diffs and housings out for MD and 4.11s. My left swival seal is gutted from samd Islands so If ventureing in that far I may as well do the lot:) Will have to get caster done at same time as it will be sitting 3" higher. Have weighed the Rangie and looks like we need 180lb front and 320 rear springs. The LRA springs are not handed so I fear It may lean right as will have a 45 ltr quarter tank on RHS and most times driver only. We will see how it goes. LRA now only suply Koni shocks in long travel and are bloody dear:o. I have not made my mind up yet. AS we all know If springs and damping is wrong they ride awfull and handle like a bath tub on roller skates:eek: I'm also going to fit a defender steering damper as RRC set up will get taken out on a rock here as sit low.

I'm trying ta get a damaged 90 model from corowa 740 kms away:eek: I want a 2nd rangie to use as a donor so can do diff mods, Hopefully mod on ZF so converter locks in 3rd.http://www.aulro.com/afvb/technical-chatter/61191-zf-4hp-lock-up-converter.html
See how justinc and LRA go with them,: Machine swivels, Swap vented to disk and fit Defender calipers (Have here) get rid of the stupid sun roof. Makes wind noise at speed and creaps open.:( Have a few more pics of more parts but time for some action:angel:
Have had an oil preasure drama on last trip. Replaced pressure SW turned out to be relief valve in oil pump. Drove it for a wile like it opps:eek:, Strange thing was lifters did not collapse:confused: Just shows the gutless 3.5 does not make enough HP to grenade them selves in a hurry:D. It would have been lucky to have 5PSI @ 2200RPM:eek:Every time I backed off the idiot light came on. Have since pulled sump and checked at random a big end and mains and no damage:) It might live. My wife has dug me in the ribs get a bit more done on this one as the parts for it are all through the house and garage:D. If I can't get it done soon I will be selling the parts and giving up:(
The worst thing is there is an order I have to do it in as I wan't to get engineered. The blower and Gas will have to go on last or I have no chance.
I will start on body lift, flares and then do some brake test with 33s (Don't have 35s here yet) on to see if up to scratch before the Defender calipers and Vented disc go on.
On tyres.. I am looking at Micky T MTZ. 35X12.5 They seem to be the pick of the bad lot for all round use. Remember I do long black top runs as well as severe off road. I can't carry two sets of tyres for 1000s of kms in case I need them. So there will be a compromise:( My other consideration is 35s wont clear on my 120" 110 with out a lot off stuffing around:( I just wonder if I should come back to 33s so one size fits all. It would make the engineering easier as well. For now we'll try the 33X12.5 mongrels on it. (Motorway tyres are no more:()

Havn't done much on the Rangie as waiting till I get the wrecked 90 model so can make a reak good one out of the two and should to help speed things up.
I have started to make some billet pulleys for setting up the Super charger so can play with boost on the second rangie:twisted: Once we get engineered with lift,Tyres etc I will swap the 3.9 and blower in and try to engineer it again:eek: Then the gas:(
This one will slow it down. The next few will be smaller and boost it up more.

Thanks Khos, I'll have to make a decision on how to attack it 1st. As fitting out the wreck and swapping bodies sounds the easy way out other than getting engineered as the blower should be done last:( Also as pointed out on your thread they have some differences. Since my dash has to come out anyway there wont be much stopping me from swapping the complete wiring harness and considering the 94 Disco Dash (The Disco dash would be a challenge) or 90 Dash and air con (similar to the 89).
Took a few pics of the wreck today to show some of the good and bad.

Tough call
https://www.aulro.com/afvb/
This body looks as tho it needs a FULL paint job ... if you wanted to use it
Whats the paint job like on your 89?
Mike
;)
Rangier Rover
19th May 2009, 07:26 AM
Looking at the 90 model it only had 3 unmarked panels. The Roof and tailgates. The paint is still good just needs a wash. The Right side doors and quarter will repair easily. The left doors are still repairable. The rest of it is junk
The D pillar and rear left quarter are to far gone:(
The body and paint on my 89 if fair other than a few parking dents:(,A bit of hail mainly roof and bonnet. A half arse repair on the bonnet I done after a small tree fell on it:angel:.
Definitely be using the 89 body.
Do I swap the 89 body onto the built up 90 chassis and running gear go back to building the 89 up wile rolling using the 90s drive line etc. Fit all the lockers 4.11s,caster correction and new CVs to 90 diffs then swap them out.
If I stay on the 89 chassis may be do it in this order as can't get the time to knock it over in one go and I don't want my Rangie stranded in a shed covered in junk like all my other unfinished projects here.
1 LRA body lift 1 weekend
2 Fit flares Over a few nights near a warm fire and the fridge. Should get better at this after a few :eek:
3 Do the head gaskets etc and Fit the blower to the 90 and get it running (My neighbors are going to love this bit:twisted:) This may take a wile:(
4 Put the 90 on stands and pull the diffs and fit the Fender front brake calipers, maxi's etc.
5 swap the diffs in the 89 and fit long travel kit HD steering rods etc
6 Plumb up the Vacuum lines etc for lockers.
7 Make the ARB rear bar fit right + Make swing away tyre and jery holder.
8 Fit the 35's
9 By pass the rear proportioning valve and brake test.
10 Get engineered
11 Pull the 3.9 and ZF out of the 90, Send the valve block away for 3rd gear lock up mod.
12 By now the 3.5 should be knackered so drop the Blown3.9 with haltech and delco loom and the 90s ZF in with a P38 oil cooler
12A Pull the dash out at this point and redo air con and harness changes for the 3.9.
13 Try to get engineered again.
14 Then fit the LPG (Dual fuel)
15 Find or make some sill tanks so can get some range on fuel:eek:
I'm sure I've left something out..
Cheers Tony
Rangier Rover
25th May 2009, 09:25 PM
Spoke to the engineer concerned with this thing today as well as a few gas certified fitters. The engineer is OK with the blower atm but recommends vapour injection for the LPG to be safe.
We all know what this would cost:eek:. So Its gas and no blower or blower and no gas by the looks of it. I don't think I could put up with a duel fuel on a NA 3.5 or 3.9 as already hopelessly underpowered. :(
I guess its the blower and no gas. Long range fuel tanks may be needed.
Will have to add up running cost over a few years to work out break even point on the vapour injection idea. Will still have to be duel fuel regardless.

... It's hard to comment on your path of attack .... In the big picture of things ... This build is almost a restoration project, which normally takes 6 months of weekend work
>>> And your trying to keep this as a daily runner (<<< this is the pressure point :( )
A motor & diff change is not that hard .... But the blower + wire + ECU install / setup ... is the tough call
My line of thought is ...
Buy a 1990+ rangie with a "great body & paint / Licensed" .... Build that one up .... Then sell the 89 that you have to recover the purchase cost
.... then start fleebaying ... or the "markets" ... the odd stuff thats useless to you
This may help, clean out the shed & put dollars back in your wallet

Tony,
I have a set of 2x40ltr sill tanks on my 86 RRC. I am planning to remove them (when I pull my finger out) and place them on the markets section, as I want to fit some rock sliders and my intended use will not require me to travel great distances between refuels.
If you are still interested in a set I can drop you a line when I get them out, or if you are in a hurry just let me know around when you think you will be needing them and Iwil lsee what I can go.

Nah I self medicate, scotch and beer:angel:
I got an idea on useing a saw, this weekend gone, put nearly 4litres through the 066 out bush:angel:, cutting logs that took 2-3 of us to lift on the fires, last fire was bigger than an RR:eek: lot of us to keep warm though:twisted:
Getting time off work is the one thing, but when I can;)
is it dog friendly? my woofer will get upset if I ditch him:(

That little guy will be fine here if he doesn't bite my ankle;). My 23 dogs are usually restrained anyway and all know there is only one winner in a dog fight. Me:twisted: Seriously my lot are not aggressive at all so your new friend would be fine here. Plenty of room here for a good run as well.

And that was early last year:eek:
He'll be OK, could do with some socialising with some tougher woofers, seems to dominate the others he;s around, so might teach him:D

My wife found me this morning and said the Rangie is pulling right real bad and a brake warning light has come on. Looks like a seized caliper and its now leaking.
With a buggered Viscous, damaged swivel housing seal, rusted left front window regulator and its now doing 19 ltrs/100 on fuel today is it.
The Rangie is decommissioned until done as not safe anymore.
I'll have to get that stinking 45 series out of the way now even if I drag it out and shove it in another clustered shed for a wile.
As I now have an extra rangie and a disco here there is a **** load of spares for it anyway. I just need to find a longer out put shaft for the ZF so can use the Discos LT230 unless I find a fender one.
I'll be clearing the work shop over the next few nights so if you see me posting here before 11pm I need motivating:angel:

The frost set here at 7.30pm tonight. Has chased me in at 10.30pm even with the heavily modified top loader wood fire:mad: It never worried me at all a few years ago:confused: Must be getting older or softer;)

Jack frost is not as bad tonight;)
None on the Rangie but relevant as my wife now has my Japper. I have to Take the 120 to a clearing sale tomorrow so had to take the dodgy tires off:( Well I may as well find out what the 35s for the Rangie are like on the black top on -25 offset.
http://www.aulro.com/afvb/attachment.php?attachmentid=16021&stc=1&d=1244815969
Look at the down travel on the front end on this thing with 35s on. I lifted it with a chain block so both down together and not articulated(It dislocates the coils at times) I'm thinking 2" spacers all round and extend the pump stops so shocks don't bind. Otherwise raise the towers.
http://www.aulro.com/afvb/attachment.php?attachmentid=16022&stc=1&d=1244817191
Took it for a quick drive up to 100 kmh on speedo:angel:and steers perfect. Can drive it with one finger around corners and on our notoriously bad cambered road. Although the 120 is obviously longer than the Rangie (Makes it less twitchy) I am now content the Rangie will be fine on 35s on long trips on the black top:). I did notice the turbo spooled up earlier with the 3.54s but the 4BD1T still does it easy. They have a heap of torque:D
I hope a well sorted Blown 3.9 with 4.11s will drive as nicely and able to cruise at 100kmh+.
I have also cleared some some of the work shop :)

Disco Owner is hopefully coming up here for a week soon when he can arrange holidays:cool: So will be all hands on when he gets here including putting a LRA body lift kit in his 93 Rangie.
I started to sort this mess out here but is now worse:eek: After a few mates have just done a Safari conversion to my old 2 Door:eek: There is now beer bottles, Bits of hacked alloy, Trim and tools all over the place... But they had fun and it is now effective for four people to stand up in the back and two to shoot out of it. Most importantly all can get down inside where its warmer wile traveling when the frost is setting.
Other wise have been trying to catch up with work a bit:(

Since you have been so good to me (The collection of the 90 model) I should be able to help you find some material to make one out of:cool: Just need a taiwanese hydraulic jack or a chain block from super crap or Gas weild and some H/D casters from bunnings and weild away:D

I can do the flares latter or matt can if he manages to escape from Vic. Think I may need his help to get the blower to work in harmony with the Delco/Haltech engine management.
Have to see how we go for time as I don't want them all in pieces for to long like my other project are:(

H'mm......... I need to get some new head gaskets and a new cam for the 3.9 out of the 90 model. Can't seem to find much out about what cam to use with the blower so will go for a torque cam as will help with the low end power and see how it goes.

Well I went to the Mudgee field day today to tire kick some ATV's. So met Khos in Mudgee at the information centre. The second one:angel: My wife dropped me off as had to do a few jobs. Khos offered me a drive of his 3.9 93 Model and runs very nice for a 3.9:D Very free running and torque to burn. I also noticed the brakes are great with the fender front calipers:)
Khos has posted before on his ZF making a noise and getting warm. It dosnt lock up in 4TH and seems the converter complains under load. With the 3.54 diff's, 33s and a heap of tools in the back it was willing to pull 4th in the hills around here with only a light throttle position but knocked it back to third for the ZF's sake. Has a nice note to it at 3000 RPM:D
Showed Khos the so called work shop and his reaction I cant really post:eek:
He thought about four days to sort it all out. I recon it will be done by tomorrow night.;) Also finish the waste oil heater as only needs the oil feed line to work to keep up warm and stop the beer freezing after 9pm:twisted:
We may do a bit on the 45 series before it get shoved aside for the Rangies.
We plan to fit the LRA body lift kit to his Rangie first then move onto mine.
If we get the Lift in and flares fitted I will be happy. Any thing more will be a bonus at this stage. May be the Lockers and 4.11 CWPs.

Not a good pic but this is transfer tube I had to come up with up due to the Power steering pump from a HJ 60 now being in line of the Radiator out let so had to unsolder the bottom tank, turn it around and put the out let in the other side to over come this:mad: Also some brackets ,oil cooler and exhaust to finish. Then find all the lost bits including the clutch slave push rod:mad:
It's coming out tomorrow as now have the Rad etc back in.

Now that stinking oily 45 series is out of the way the Rangie is in the work shop and will stay till body lift, flares, brakes etc is done to engineering stage . Then the fun will begin:D
I'm now looking at some way of setting up an air water inter cooler under the blower as with a body lift there will be some room. By raising the blower I hope to find a way of helping with the notorious poor fuel air ratio that causes these Eaton blown rovers to suffer lean detonation.

That's awesome Tony , Just what I hoped to see , a Rangie inside the workshop :D . you did a Great Job with the Toyotoa btw , I just sat in the workshop and watched you throwing spanners at it , your old man must be very pleased now that the 45 is running again and has power and A/C . must get hot in summer. recieved the Bag I left behind with all my welding gear in it , cheers . you're spot on with the rangie lockup converter not locking in 4th and has lots to complaint about under load :( oh well one of those things that needs attention soon.
Look forward to seeing lots more piccys of the 89 project . We'll definitely pull the 90 engine out next time I'm there and do the H/G on it and few other bits and get the Blower on and see how it goes, I think you need to do something about your Fuel Reg on the 90 if you're going to throw the Blower on :angel:the Injectors should have enough Flow.

The Rangie had a large branch fall on it and also got hailed on at Lismorehttp://www.abc.net.au/news/stories/2007/10/10/2055299.htm on our way home from Morton Island in 2007 after we had submerged it in a deep water crossing:eek:.
Wow time gets by on us doesn't it;) I have not touched the Rangie mechanically till now. Have had a bloody good run out of it.:)
It had a hard few years but is still with us. Fortunately the 90 has a straight turret the rest will buff out with a bit off effort.

Not to many bugs in the Toyota other than fuel control playing games
Swaped realys etc and found a dry joint at a plug in the end:)
I'll get the Rangie up on stands today and start undoing body mounts bar work etc and get this LRA lift happening:D
I wonder if a S/H converter may fix your auto for a wile? The trany feels OK to me:) Has no slippage other than torque converter.
I have a Malpassi variable fuel regulator with the blower. How are your alloy welding skills going? Want to have a crack at building an inter cooler to squeeze between the blower and intake. About 2.5" thick. Have to see if I can scrounge a air water set up off a truck dismantler and make it fit:twisted:

from Memory , there are spacer blocks that are engineered to lift your Bull Bar (That was the case with 300tdi Disco ) and there's brackets that bolt onto chassis , if you end you using these , it would mean you'll need to lift your Radiator up and will probably stress your cooler and Radiator Hoses , easiest is to just cut your mounting points on the ARB bar and lower it and weld it again. This way you don't have to modify your Radiator fan Shroud and it stays. I was Told you won't use all of what's in the lift kit, you'll probably have to make some adjustments yourself.
Re: LRA Flares , IMO they look nicer in Black Trim , as apposed to Colour code , but that's something personal.

I will have a close look at this before I rush into it. The radiator is going to a trusted radiator place to be cleaned and have the rod treatment if needed so will be out of the way.
My old 2 door has bar raised and radiator lowered but has a very rough body lift as not engineerable.

Air would work but be a engineering marvel to fit as the blower would have to be rotated 90 deg and some very fancy manifolds. Be no use with LPG:( Hence the air water that has bugger all displacement and will fit nicely between the blower and the manifold.
I just have a feeling it wont be happy with out the fridge due to the heat this style of blower makes with any deasent boost.

The Rangie has lapsed rego so best way now is, fix the brakes and damage from the bore pipe incident, then get it blue slipped in standard form.

Nah, I think the cause of death was something in the intake after blower, before pistons, as the blower was split from the motor when i got it and there was some remnants of something I couldn't find it had come from anywhere internal, but that was a long time ago!

Hi Matt, yea still alive and kicking, not too much as changed here since your last visit.:D Still pushing the 120 about as daily work driver.
Few more toys etc and bit of much needed infrastructure is about it otherwise.
I had thoughts of selling all the parts and pensioning off the Rangie for something newer, but since I have so many spares and wrecks here it would be a false economy.
Tell you what, we cant kill the old 3.5 efi. Keeps going and going and going.
I've mounted that blower on the damaged 90 rangie so can set up properly. Not worrying about the LPG as the damn stuff is too exy around here anyway.
So long as I can get the fuel consumption under 20/100 we'll put up with it.
Should be able to with the Haltec ECU

When I fitted to new diff and checked the alignment, it was found the diff housing was bent over 12mm.:o
No way the Maxidrive locker would work like this so we had to use a 20ton jack and chain to stress it enough to straighten as my porta power didn't have the guts to do it alone. (No pics as could have been a OH&S issue with the stress on that little chain.) Pressed the housing over 20mm to get close. Now has a diff truss so shouldn't bend again. In hind sight, I probably should have welded an internal sleeve inside the short side as Ben did to his county, very good idea that.
Rangier Rover

Digging up the dead,
We see vehicles come and go around here, but the Rangie just seems to soldier on and slowly improve over the years.
This one still helps run our property and often has heavy trailers in tow.
,
I still can't kill the bloody gutless 3.5 and at a tad over 400,000ks, is milestone for any abused engine.
Does not use oil, not use coolant, is down on power as cam is shot but starts, runs and works well.
We have a fresh 3.9 here ready to drop in with the blower etc but I'm now considering fitting the blower on this old 3.5 with a new EFI cam as I believe these engines are much more robust. They have to be as we have overheated this thing several times with hoses blowing out and it still seems fine.
Many 3.9's and 4.6's in our area have had massive issues due to minor overheating as liners shift etc.:(
The duel lockers and its standard appearance has surprised many when we play in the harder stuff. We still have a very low center of gravity as not lifted yet and I can drive crazy lines with out falling over. Had many offer to buy it as so surprised with the agility but like my series Land rovers, shes not for sale.
