Which motor will fit

Anything is possible.
Td5,possibly too hard,too many electronics to sort.Better off with a TDi I would think.

When fitting a more modern engine in an old car, isn't it necessary, by law, to fit all the modern safety features as well?

I would suggest a search of the relevant state regulations would be in order.

No its the other way around,you cant fit old engines to new vehicles.
That Ser3 will only need to meet ADRs of the era it was made.An engineer may request a brake upgrade to meet a more powerfull engine.In a Series the Stage1/original 6 3" wide front drum/shoes are good enough(when I was getting my Toy engineered with a ford V8)

I agree with Landyandy, Tdi would be the way to go or if you can get one an Inter 2.8Tgv (or what ever they were....Sorry Jase) as you only really need 1 wire to run them.....the fuel shutoff soloniod.

Your choice of gearboxes and TC's, Auto from a 300Tdi Disco with Deefa or Disco TC or R380 with the same choice of TC.

I'd think the brakes would be ok with a booster but you could convert to Discs if you wanted but that is a different story.

I'd be looking at fitting power steering while your there as the power steering pump on the 300Tdi would be a pain to try and disconnect so you may as well use it.

Good luck if you go the Td5 route, Id be thinking it will be a reel pain to try and seal up all the electrics in a series 3 on top of the fact that there is several miles of spagetti just to get 1 running anyway but if you good with wiring then it wouldnt be too bad as I suppose everything could go the same places as on a Deefa but you would want to start with a Deefa engine as the Disco one has all the extras that you then need to trick the computer into thinking that they are still there.

I know a few TD5 guys are going to flame me for saying that but......They all know Im right :wasntme::angel: Tdi would be a world easier....just a little slower :p

G'day, have a look at these guys. Although they're overseas, they have a fair bit of experience and good info on these conversions.

I'd also consider an Isuzu 2.8L 4jb1 turbo - same as the Holden Rodeo. The gearbox adaptor might need some research but they're available new for about grand which beats 14 grand for a new Tdi.

Personally i would fit a 200 Tdi

Same enigne mounts same bell houseing pattern . So straight forward swap for the 2.25 petrol or diesel . No electrics to change or live with :):)
Where as the Td 5 can be a whole load of pain with the electrics
