I decided to give the Disco a rest and drove the brother's Mitsu Lancer to work. Its a 2000/01 model and pings to buggery under hard acceleration or on hills.

How does one prevent pinging on a modern engine? Shouldn't the ECU prevent knocking from occuring at all?

Depends whether the ECU has a knock sensor/knock retard, if so, it's probably a faulty knock sensor, if not, the timing's out:D

Put some premium in it, might stop the rattle;)
