We've put our first 5000k on our Tdi so it was bonnet up and check it over.
Do others find this is THE MESSIEST engine to service? Bloody oil everywhere, the V8 was bad enough but this dropped oil on the draglink from the sump, then the filter dosed anything else just in case it was missed:eek:. Fuel filter was on TIGHT, even using a strap. It had just been serviced before we bought it so I had waited but it just goes to show don't assume anything, here's what I found..

I think (hope) the outer oring was still sealing from ingress, but the one you can see in pieces was rock hard & fragments are a worry. Meh what do you do?
Adjusted the tappets too because it had a couple of rattlers, all were out a bit but No1 was the worst with at least double the spec clearance. Still, better to hear it than smell it.

Got a small vibration in the car and have found a whisker of play in the rear uni of the front shaft, but more concerning is the play in the front output and also perhaps explains the whine. It doesn't leak but it's something to keep a close eye on.

I did the same the first time I changed the oil on my Tdi. Have since read this forum and the best solution is paper in a plastic bag.

Put some paper in the bag. Loosen the filter (shame about yours being so tight) place the plastic bag over the filter and remove. Just have to hold it for a couple of seconds to catch any oil. Slowly extricate it and tie it off. (or zip lock it)

Worked for me.

It could be worse, chap here at work has a 4.2 Patrol with the filters horizontal he says it soaks everything.

The Kubota has its transmission filter mounted onto the pump upside down. The genuine filter has no anti drain back valve so it conveniently empties a litre of oil everywhere... But of course, Japanese engine design is world class!

Filter trick sounds good but does anyone have a solution 2 the oil hitting the drag link from the sump?

Well that is the question, I normaly hold the sump plug in the hole just letting a little stream of oil to slowly come out until it doesn't pour everywhere so quickly but doesn't work really well if the oil is hot;)
