Hi Dullbird, I have to be practically standing on my defender to get the central locking to work. Lock/unlock range is probably 5 meters at best.

mmmmmmmmmm so i'm not the only one then:mad:.......i might as well unlock it with the key you have to be so close
i was hoping that it might of been faulty as today for some reasson the blipper wouldn't lock the car and i was right next to the door lock with the remote...in the end i gave up and locked it with the key, after opening it again it then happily locked with the blipper after that:o.......

This has happened to me a few times, (refusing to lock/unlock), I have found that the remote works better in my left hand though........

I'm getting all kinds of confused visions happening:eek: Seriously, a mate's old BMW remote would only work if he aimed it through his cheek with his mouth open.
The remote distance is not great on the Td5 either. Ours doesn't work much further than about 1 1/2 metres.
We had the car in for warranty the other day and mentioned this to the service bloke. They evidently extended the pickup aerial somehow and it remains to be seen whether this has improved the distance or not.

I have mentioned this on another thread and it is cetainly one for Mythbusters but... my remote works much better when I hold it against my temple.
Without - I need to be right next to the car and hold it above window sill height. Occasionally (like today) it refuses to work AT ALL and I dance around the car like an idiot pressing the button waving the f***ing thing up in the air.
Against my head - I can be standing inside the house about 6m away.
Go figure.

why do we do that......why do we dance around for half our pressing it up against the drivers door window. Why dont we just use the key:D..
its the principle isn't....lol

Actually tried ours today for the first time since modification and the remote now works from at least 5 metres which is a vast improvement from before.
Anyone having difficulty, I would suggest you take it up with your dealer, as it can be rectified.

I wonder - the range on our previous 02MY Defender key-fob was much better than the new one. Maybe the thicker steel doors are to blame? It has to be something obstructing the signal or bad positioning of the receiver in the dash since the electronics are probably exactly the same.

Yes, this was incredibly annoying.
On two occasions it worked from almost 10 meters away. 10 whole meters-I was so impressed. then it went back to standing right next to it.

ohhhhh:eek:........wooooopsie:eek:.
i had no choice the car wouldn't lock but in saying that i never unlocked the car then tried to start it.....i unlocked the car minutes after locking it and then tried to lock the car with the blipper and it then worked!! and has done since.
it was like unlocking it with the key jogged its memory of what that silly black thing is actually supposed to do:D

Same reason we will turn the entire hpuse upside down looking for the TV remote, when you could just press the button on the TV......

I complained about this very issue 10 years ago when I got my D1. The dealer told me it was a design feature to stop people scamming the digital lock/unlock code from a distance.
As he told it, there is some machine which can read the code broadcast when you lock your car, and they can play it back when you have gone shopping to open the vehicle. Dunno if that is true or just a myth.
And also - my '07 110 can't be opened from further than about 2 or 3 metres away.

It's true that devices like this exist but the service person was pulling crap using that as a the reason it was made like that.
What about the peugoets I got when the fender was in for servicing that could be opened with the remote from no less then 50 meters maybe further and all the other cars with these systems. the FL2 one was pretty impressive I could even turn the head lights on and off from 50+ meters away, lol.

Hi you all!
Have been reading the forum for some time.First time I post a reply though. Only last week became a Landrover owner!(New Defender, after 6months of waiting) Was very exited.(not so exited now) From the second day I noted some problem with the remote unlocking/locking. Sometimes will take up to 17 tries (right next to vehicle)before it would respond, sometimes work first try.Took it to the dealer on Sunshine Coast(did not have faith in my local dealer as the sales person did not even know anything about the basic controls of the vehicle!)
After talking to LR in UK they reset the system(disconnected the battery cables, touched them together to drain all residual power, waited 15minutes, and then reconnected) This seemed to work, and the remote was back to working perfectly. This lasted for about half a day. Now has the same problem again. The dealer contacted LR again, and they now blame a possible faulty contact on the ??ECU aerial. They want me to bring back the vehicle to remove the instrument cluster to check this!
I do hope they can fix this, as it is very annoying!

Hi Henno - they will fix it - don't stress :D That's the good thing about having a warranty.
Just as a thought, are there any big radio transmitters where you are trying to lock/unlock the car? These can mess up the signal and make it not work. There are a couple of streets in Adelaide where I just cannot use the remote at all, due to the Police radio transmitters being stronger than the handset.
Does it not work all over the place, or just in specific places?
Welcome by the way.

No radio transmitters that I know of. Does it anywhere, all the time! Seems to be worse last few times I tried. Up to 23 goes to lock it this morning!
