D3 losing wheel nuts?

I checked my wheel nuts on the W/E and couldn't budge them, using a 450mm 1/2" wrench with a 22mm socket. At the local tyre place (who recently changed a tyre and rotated the wheels) today they told me that they always do up the nuts on the D3 extra tight as "it's well known that they fall off".

They were adamant about this and didn't want to acknowledge the other end of this scenario whereby you're out on a track some where and can't change the bloody tyre!

They suggested I carry a pipe to lengthen the brace but I have an issue with this. Surely the standard LR brace (which is crap) is designed to be long enough to provide sufficient torque to tighten and release the nuts?

So two questions:
Anyone experienced losing wheel nuts?
Thoughts on the length of the brace?

Not only have I never had one come undone, I've never heard of them coming undone.

Hope you got them to get the right torque setting on them, as doing them to tight
can brake the studs.
Some of these mobs wouldn't have a torque wrench in the work shop as they don't
know how to use them.

Are you sure they didn't think it was a GU Patrol as THEY are well known for the wheels (Alloys) coming undone if not seated and torqued correctly, I have never heard of it on a D3 though;)

If you cant get a wheel nut undone using the genuine equipment somethings wrong,,



It seems to me they have not done ANY OTHER D3's,,
or--
Those OTHER D3's have never had a flat.

The place is wall to wall Jeeps so maybe there's some bias there.

They did redo all the wheel nuts and check my wheel alignment, which I asked them to do as a separate issue. The report back was that the alignment was fine and they wouldn't accept payment for the work, so I can't fault the customer service.

i wouldnt be going back to these guys.....looks like they have no idea what they are talking about...how tight is extra tight?wheel nuts dont just fall off.

if the nuts & threads are clean & nuts are seating correctly,threads not binding(antisieze helps),and are torqued up in the correct sequence with an accurate torque wrench you will have no problems.

you could always check them yoursef in a week or so may give you piece of mind

i always use a torque wrench on the d2 & yes the handle on the wheel brace is a bit short....takes a lot of effort to undo the nuts

they only come off if not done up correctly.....or stolen

My bet is they are getting confused between a Patrol and a D3 - Patrols do it all the time - about 18mths ago one was parked in the middle of a roundabout near home on three wheels - I mentioned this on Exploreroz and the owner of the car posted and said it was his car I saw and it had wrecked his brake disc and that was not the first time he had lost a wheel.

How did they check your wheel alignment? Only the dealer can do it because it has to go on their computer and the air suspension put into alignment mode! Sounds like you have been taken for a ride!

My wheel alignment was done by my local Bridgestone dealer. as he said it was quite a way out, have now done over 100000Kms on 6 BFG AT's and still perhaps another 20000 to go. I think the dealers want you to believe there is a lot of mystery in the suspension settings but it may not be so.
