I'm not in an area that has Alpine/winter diesel, is there an additive i can use, i know Kero can be used, but is there a specific additive that is used to add too diesel.

Also what ratio kero to diesel do i use:confused:

I think my screaming fuel pump was because i didn't have alpine/winter diesel in the tank for the weekend away at Black Springs:mad:

Is it Kerosene to add to diesel to make Alpine mix? @ ExplorOz (http://www.exploroz.com/Forum/Topic/55017/Is_it_Kerosene_to_add_to_diesel_to_make_Alpine_mix .aspx)

If going to the High Country in winter, I'll put enough in the tank to get up there then fill up at a local town -they all have Alpine. Of course, its a bit dearer buying up there, but probably no more than mixing your own alpine.

If it really is getting severe you can put some petrol in the tank, up to 10%, not more! But I doubt it will get cold enough Down Under to warrant this approach.

Sorry but dont do this and expect it to be like Alpine.

We used to get at least 10 or more brainiacs that would do this every winter on Mt Buller that soon found out that it doesnt work.

PULP can improove performance at about a 5% mix but is not economical for the improovement but some people recon it is the equivilent to LPG injection but again it's not.

The Kero has a lower freezing point than diesel and mixes with diesel well as well as diesel engines run on Kero no probs BUT, the more diesel you mix it with the less it works so I wouldnt rely on that either.

Other myths is that running the engine will some how majically make the fuel degell in the tank but with out a heater in the tank the that of course will only reduce the amount of time your car will run for.

Putting a blanket on the ground under the tank........Yes I have seen it and no it didnt work.

Also not a good idea to light a fire under the plastic tank in a Disco (for instance) for obvious reasons but if you have a steel tank, a small fire under the tank can put enough heat into it to degel it enough for you to bleed it up again but if it is still cold then it will be geled up in the lines and filters as well so witout blowing out lines and changing filter then it is pretty difficult until you can get the snot to pass.

The stuff Dean uses would probably be the best bet and would more than likely cost no more than the difference in fuel prices in high country Vic or do what Waynep does and fill up up there with at least about 2/3rds of a tank.

Mansfield...$1.85.9 tonight for Alpine Diesel or $8.00 for a single dose of additive.

Baz, do you want me to ask them what the green "Additive" is ?

1:20 kero to diesel is a rough field workaround.

So I have just discovered, according to Land Rover's Manual for Africa, if diesel isn't available, Kerosene may be used provided 10,000 ppm of fresh oil is added. Now if you excuse me, I'm off to buy 205L of untaxed kerosene for my incredibly thirsty optimus...:whistling:

Thanks mate but i have some stuff from Repco that Land Rover recomends, it's expensive but you only need 25ml per tank, i have bought some kero if the Repco stuff doesn't work as a standby.

Ray, Alpine Diesel isn't avaiable in the areas i'm going, even if it's needed, otherwise i'd do what Wayne suggested.

Where i'm going gets below 0 at night and the car will be siiting all day and night and from what happened at Black Springs i don't want the fuel pump screaming it's t1ts off again.

Thanks all for the suggestions.

Baz, you can eliminate half the problem by doing what every farmer does with his tractor -

Park your car where the sun will get it in the morning. By the time you've packed up, it'll have a bit of heat in it.

I'll be down at Dingo Dell, if it isn't rainning, the sun doesn't get to us till about 10am.

Since coming home from Black Springs the fuel pump is back too normal, while there, i filled up in Oberon and the fuel pump still screamed it's head off the next day and we did go for a long drive that day, i would of imagined they would of had winter diesel there.

The main reason that it works for a tractor is that the fuel tank is normally on top of the motor.

Wont ever work with the tank under the car.

Some of the older tractors such as David Browns had the potential to run hot water through pipes in the tank.

We used to use this by dropping the water from the radiator when the tractor was parked (as we never ran anti freeze) and then to start it in the morning would fill the radiator with boiling water off the combustion stove and then start the engine and circulate it.

Very rarely had gelling in that tractor but my uncles Inter........PITA for gelling as the tank was behind the seat and the filters were in the open.

I worked with an old english bloke at my last job he said they you to use a about 1L of Kero to about 120L of diesel never failed him.

I was up in the HC on that last cold snap a few weeks back it it snowed down to 800mtrs I ran 1L of kero to 140L of diesel and never had a problem it was the batteries that didn't like the cold!
