View Full Version : Tamron for nikon

hello all you avid phtographers out there
have any of you had any experience with Tamron lenses?
I can't as much as i would like to afford any of the top end nikkor lenses
so I have been looking at the
Tamron 17-50mm f/2.8 XR Di II Lens
Tamron 28-75mm f/2.8 XR Di Lens
this is probably the only way i'm going to get something with a 2.8 apperture without having to spend over a grand to get one:(
so anyone know anything about these lenses? used them? pro's con's?
i have heard that tamron use good glass rather than plastics is this true?
i would like to buy a nice lense before i go up to the north in oct, but have to watch the old budget as i'm also looking into buying a hd camcorder to, to document the whole trip and put it to dvd
thanks

I have a 100 to 400 Tamaron lense on a F4 body and think that it is a very good lense, compact with a good aperature (can not remember) and with no distortion.
I got my local photo shop to get one in for me to try before buying, and the professional photographer at the shop was very impressed by it and was considering buying a couple of Tamron lenses for himself.
If the lens are comparitively heavy, then they mostlikely have glass not plastic lens.
I would buy another tamron lens.

In my days of 'playing at photography' some 20 odd years ago, most of the lenses I used were Tamron - on my Olympus OM 1 and OM 10
Great little lenses - never had issues with them - and obviously much cheaper than Carl Zeiss or similar

DB, depends on what you want to use it for. Nothing wrong with Tamron lenses (though if you test drive the Nikkor 24-70 you'll see what a really good lens is like :D - just ignore the price  ).
Depends on what you want to do. 17-50 would be better for landscape and give you the wider angle. 28-75 would be more general purpose. I don't know either lens and haven't used them. My main lens is a 24-70 f/2.8 Nikkor and it would be on my camera most of the time. That said I'll swap down or up as needed. Have a look on some of the DSLR forums.
Which Nikon DSLR do you have?

If i wasnt using canon lenses with my Canon 30D i would use either a tamron or sigma lens, very good value and quality optics and as you said the only way you can afford a lens of that aperture without having to sell a landy to pay for it.

i have a D80
with a 18-50, 55-200 and a 70-300........with the off roading i tend to use the 18-50 more as i just cant get far enough away with the 55-200
but all these lenses are up in the 5's aperture range.......
dont get me wrong these lenses are great and have created some wonderful pics, and at my course most of the comments i get are about the great colour that i get!
you know what its like though you just got to have that little bit more:twisted:
so would like to get some lenses in the 2.8 range
interesting about the sigma loanrangie, personally from what i have read i wouldn't touch them you got any pics that you have taken with the lenses just be good to see what you get off them

If what you use most is already in that range I'd stick with replacing the 18-50. There's nothing between 17 and 18mm and better glass is always a good investment. If you can get to play with both lenses this would be a good idea.

I have just purchase the Sigma 18-50mm 2.8. I absolutly love it!! I took a couple of my shots down to the local pro shop, and he was amazed by the shots.
His advice was the Sigma and Tamron lenses in most cases are 99% as good as the Canon/Nikon Lenses. (He uses Nikon) And if your budget was open go for the Canon or Nikon if not the 'cheaper' lenses will serve you just aswell.
One of the things I love about my new lens is how quick it is to focus. I was playing with my older lens, Canon 70-300 4.5-5.6 yesterday, and it was SO SLOW. And it was always hunting for focus. I will definatly be getting rid of that lens and updating to the Sigma 70-200 2.8 in a month or so.

Shame I don't run Nikon, but if I ever found some good lenses 2nd hand, I'd grab them, then worry about a body afterwards.

I have the 28-75 on my Canon 30D, and find it excellent for the money. I'd like Canon L-series glass, which is far better, but like you I have more important things to spend the difference on. The Tamron is more than good enough for me - the only thing I don't like is the lens physically changes length as you zoom (There is a fancy name for this, but I forget what it is) whereas others manage this by moving the internals. It's hardly a big deal in the grand scheme of things though.
I also need to add a 70-200ish f2.8 too, and this looks like being the Sigma at a fraction of the cost of the Canon version. I have the 300mm f4 and am quite impressed with that.

Don't the Nikon DSLRs fit the older prime/fixed focal length lenses?
As a couple have said above, why not pick up some older lenses that don't have auto focus.
These folks are keen-
Flickr: No metering lenses on Nikon DSLRs (http://www.flickr.com/groups/365610@N21/)
http://www.barrie-tao.com/d70finder.html
You should be able to pick up some excellent second hand Nikon glass that's also nice and fast.
It's really hard to get a zoom lens to match the quality of a prime lens, so good zoom lenses cost a lot of money.

Pentax-A lenses to go with it that I scored off a pro who used an LX as his back up, believe it or not. The two lenses are absolutely mint.
I desperately wanted an LX for years as it' still one of the most environment proof cameras ever made, (perfect for back packing into the middle of no-where) then when I finally acquire one I never use the bloody thing ?
Also have a few Super Takumar SMC primes that I've picked up over the years for the old Spotmatic, my first ever SLR that I was given at 16.

Hey mate
Nikon make brilliat lenses, always have probably always will.
They have a 28-200 zoom.
Not ultra fast but super versatile. sharp, well built and all you ever need.
i am a Nikon man, used to work as a professional photographer 15 years ago.
I hate to tell you though but Canon are now the leaders in DSLR.
They have better colour, lighter quicker lenses and are cheaper.
Their compacts are super quick with face recognition software etc.
Still, I have a Nikon D70s with 18/70 nikkor lens.
handy but now showing its age but so strong I doubt new cameras will match it.
Anyway, back to your lens, tamron and sigma are value for money but never compare them to a Nikon.
Like Hyundai and Landrover.
just not in the same league.
You get what you pay for.
The Zoom in cheaper lenses will wear quickly and are way more prone to wear due to sand. Which when 4wdriving is common.
Pay a bit more and forget the HD video.
They are still at least a year away till the quality is even close to that of tape.
Sorry I burst another bubble.

Hey Rick
Cool! (massive hijack)
Someone else with an LX! :D
They are an absolte gem of an SLR. And very under rated.
I had about 5 Nikons at one stage that I loved including and early F and a magic F2, but had to sell them when I bought my first house. :( (but I too, still have my first school K1000).
Then my camera tech said "well why not buy one of these...I think they're better!"
And in some ways he was right - like you say the weather sealing is excellent and the OTF metering was arguably the best around and I reckon still cuts it against the matrix metering of today if you know what you're doing. :) I was able to score one of the body grips off fleabay a few years back and that just made it even nicer to use.
I'm thinking about getting a K20D so I can use all my old SMC A & M series glass and get similar weather sealing in a DSLR.
Cheers

Your one or two steps ahead of me, just been looking at getting the Nikon D80 and the Nikon 18-200 3/3.5-5.6 VR lens and maybe get the Nikon 12-24mm f/4g too. Not 100% sure yet! or should i go the canon 450d:eek: too confussing and canon don't have a good travel lens like the nikon 18-200mm :( any opinions ?
On another note, my boss just brought a new Panasonic Point and Shoot Digital Camera and it does full HD video on it !!! NOT BAD QUALITY, plus u get a small camera to carry places you can't be bothered carrying the big camera !!! I have found that more and more it is easier to put video and pictures on a website and show it to people that way, people don't sit down and watch home movies anymore :)
My two cents worth :)

I'm planning on replacing my lenses slowly with EF-S versions, looking at an 18-55mm IS as my main lens, really want a 17-85 mm IS but they are 3 x the price.I just sold a 1.4 x teleconverter as it was superfluous on all but the 5D and 1D. Also want a 50mm 1.8 as a portrait/lowlight lens.

So how are you liking the lens ? i now thinking about either the tamron 17-50 2.8 or sigma equivalent or even the sigma 17-70 2.8/4 . ! problem i find with the zooms starting at 24/28 is that with the DSLR's crop factor of 1.6 x you lose most of the benefits of a wide angle lower end.

haven't used it as of yet i only received it 2 days ago.....going to get it out later and have a play with it....
just a question it has the dial to change the aperture......it is an I/F lense so it has auto focus but haveing he aperture ring does that mean i can set the aperture with in the camera any more, does it always have to be set manually with this lense?
also loanrangie i'm not too worried about the wide angle if i feel i have lost out with the start of this lense i will just save up and get a lense that covers the lower ranges 11-17 some thing like that:)
i'm now very much considering after i have tried the lense out getting a sigma 130-400
or 70-200 not sure as of yet.....i will post up a pic with the new lens as soon as i have taken one:)

Not sure about the aperture bit as canon's never had that where as the nikons did i believe in the early days. It should be auto exposure too so aperture would be set by the camera. I like my current lens but i need a faster and wider one so 17-50 2.8 would be just right.

A lot of those cheaper lenses wont like running wider than f5.6. They will start to misbehave in lower light. The Sima 12-24 f4/5.6 for example that retails for $700 is like this. BUT, above that they are pretty amazing. tamron and Sigma are the leaders in the cheaper lense area.
The more expensive lenses perform better in a wider range of conditions.
I have never bought a brand new lens, always looking in second hand shops and camera stores for bargains. Just bought a Nikon D2X, Nikkor DX 17-55 f2.8, Nikkor 70-200 f2.8, SB 800 Flash - whole lot, $4500. Piccies are unbelievable.
Also keep an eye out for good quality Prime lenses. As the boys have said, For landscape stuff, and non Newsy things (Like what we do) pretty damn fine. I have Niikkor 20mm f4.5, 24 F2.8, 28 f2.8, 50 f1.5, 80-200 f4.5, 300 f4.5. All have been used to great effect. Least Fav is the 80-200. But the rest are Brilliant and a nice way to make pix! I am actually thinking about selling my old kit, with above lenses, an FM and FE with MD12 Motordrives. But they are hard to part with....

Part with it while you can, film stuff is virtually worthless now, i'm lucky that my lenses could still be used on my digiatl otherwise i would have been up for double what i paid.

just a question it has the dial to change the aperture......it is an I/F lense so it has auto focus but haveing he aperture ring does that mean i can set the aperture with in the camera any more, does it always have to be set manually with this lense?
No you just use the camera for aperture as normal.
Are you sure its an aperture ring and not the zoom or focus ring?
IF: usually refers to internal focus

Nikon 80-400 is better and the 70-200 Nikon is one of the best lenses around. Check out dpReview.com for a comparison with the Sigma 70-200.

i want to upgrade....all my lenses to 2.8 i had the oppotunity to purchase nikkor lenses with the 2.8 but i was recomended that i dont due to their wieght and my camera body
thats why i was advised to get the sigma or tamron......
and i can see why as the tamron lense i have has a fair bit of weight behind it....

thought i would post up a couple of pictures.....sorry i know sunsets are always done to death but i took these tonight while walking the dogs
this is with the tamron lens i have just brought(28-75. f2.8, so far i think its ok, the only thing i have noticed is i dont believe it focus's as fast as my nikon 55-200 vr nikon lense which is 5.6.
even so seems to give nice clear pictures i'm now highly considering a sigma 2.8 zoom lense but at $1000 yep i reckon i will be considering for a little bit longer as i'm supposed to be saving for a hi def camera:(..to replace my old one before our trip as i want to take a video diary to put to dvd.

Hi Lou;
Searching around the web for a Sigma 70-200 HSM 2.8 Lens I found this review
Sigma 70-200mm f/2.8 APO EX HSM Reviews (http://www.photographyreview.com/cat/lenses/35mm-zoom/sigma/PRD_83598_3128crx.aspx)
quite a few people have used this lens and apparently it produces some very sharp images .

hi stew yes you are right from what everyone says nikon is the only way to go....but only if you have the money to buy them:)
i was also advise by a professional photographer of 40years that for my camera which is the nikon D80 that the nikon lenses are really a touch to heavy for a camera body that is prodominatly plastic... if picked up wrong with out thinking i could easily damage the body near the mounting ring.
now you may be thinking what does he know, but in talking to the guy i believe he gives good genuine advice especially as the reason i got talking to him was to buy his 80-200 f/2.8 lense so he had everything to lose by telling me i would be better off with a sigma and some other fixed lens (is this what you rfer to as prime? as in a 90mm)...which is what i'm looking at buying next the sigma 70-200..
i have got some really nice good colour photos from my cheaper lenses of 5.3 etc but there not so great with the moving stuff although the tamron i felt had a slower shutter them them it did pick movement really well.
think the colour rendition does come out on the slightly cooler side than my lower end nikons, and i cant say i prefer one over the other in regards to the colour becasue they both work in there own way.

hey stewie i looked at your pics they are really nice...
i also looked at the forum you gave me and to be honest i was expecting them to slate the lens i have but they dont!! the only thing some say is reliability.....quite a few have seem to have broken:(
thats the chance you take though i suppose when your always looking for bang for buck.....
if i got rid of the 3 landrovers i could probably have a nice kit too:D...
the amount of money i spend a month on the new defender i could honestly have my self a pro lense every 6 weeks...
the sacrifices we make hey:(....bloody men:mad: blane it on the boyfriends defender fetish i reckon

Just buy the nikon AF-S DX 18-200 VR lens for the D80, the most versatile lens around and you don't need to carry lots of lenses with you when travelling !

i wish i had brought that lens in the first place....but never knew about it until recently when i started buying photography magazines..
the first lens i brought was a 55-200 nikon with vr, and i think its a very good lens
i also got a 18-50nikon and a 70-300 nikon these all did me proud when i was learing how to use the camera and stuff, and thought that they would do me just fine....i very quickly started to learn the limitations and wanted more!!
i can honestly say i have really only swapped between my 18-50 and my 55-200 and haven't used my 300 that much!! hence why i wanted to change to a couple of 2.8's in this range although it would of been nicer to get a little lower than the 28 that i got, but hey cant win them all
i know what your saying about the whole traveling thing but to be honest i never had a problem carrying my gear around the states and i was carrying camera and all three lens's in my back pack....and most other traveling is done within my car.
i hate learing about things the hard way and should of posted this up when i was learing to get the advise from all you guys..
but its done now and i have to make the most of what i have and as much as i would really really love to buy expensive nikon lens its probably not going to happen:(.....cant really justify the prices that they fetch when i only really do this as a hobby, if i was doing it for a job for sure i would invest in really really good glass. but that will never happen either

Nice and sharp pics there dullbird, i have just bought a sigma 17-70 2.8/4 lens so when i get it i'll post some pics. I was torn between the tamron 17-50 2.8 and the sigma and in the end i was offered the sigma for a price i couldnt refuse plus the 17mm wide end equates to 28mm on my canon.

and i have also just noticed for a similar price i can get a nikon as well so i'm very very torn..

It's highly likely that Nikon will replace the 70-200 f/2.8 VR with a new one later this year, if the rumours are to be believed. If they do you may well pick up one of the older ones a lot cheaper than current prices. These are a brilliant lens. The 80-200 is the grandfather to it and also very good but lacks the VR.

dullbird,
Visit this site if you already haven't www.kenrockwell.com he writes reviews continously on anything photographic, he also has links to other photographers. Caution though he does dribble on some times, you may need to ignore that.
I like his work he captures great colour and is free with tech info, worth a look.
