Why blame Rudd, every politician since Fraser who actually imposed a National Wage Freeze in 1980's and removed 17.5% leave loading has at one stage argued that for the sake of the Nation wage increases should be nil or minimal. No proof for this economic theory having any actual benefit in fighting inflation or improving productivity.
If your unhappy with what your being paid find another job, plenty of better paying jobs about, but your paid more for a good reason, there other negatives about the job like being away from home for three weeks at a time, or having to travel a few hours.
If onyl if l hadn't bought my hosue in 2004 and spent the deposit on FMG shares, l wouldn't be working today, l wouldn't owe on a $300,000 mortgage, l would be a bloody multi millionaire and taking it easy.

Yea welcome to life.
I was real impressed a couple of weeks ago when they quoted the government saying that the public servants should suck it up and do the job for the love of the country.:2up::2up::2up:
They crap on you, lie to you, deliberatly knife you in the back and then expect you to work harder and not get even enough to keep up with inflation!

How can they pay you any more, they have to pay for the fuel for all of their overseas trips. Anna Bligh went to America to investigate a traffic system that is currently used in New Zealand. this is getting so bad that low life MP's are being left in charge of the country while the KRUDD party are getting lap dances around the world, which we are paying for :)
They spend all of there time out of Australia, probably looking for better jobs:D

There is a man in Vietnam who has not slept for 33 years. Personally, I'd be over the moon if I could operate on a 'continuous duty cycle' as it would mean I could invest the required 40-48 hours per week study, and then in the evenings work a proper 40 hour week to earn enough to live.
There has been extensive expenditure on apprenticeships and training by the government, and encouragement through schools to pursue trades as part of remedying the 'skills shortage', and at least in doing so an income is derived from working. I know its insufficient, but at the end of the day, these people are being paid to learn.
Honestly, rather than giving a laptop to each secondary school student (which they will only use it watch porn and get off), abolish HECS. Maybe it'll mean Indian students aren't required to drive taxi's late at night and risk getting stabbed.

I dunno, I reckon HECS is a pretty good way to subsidise Higher education. Your fees get paid from future earnings before tax and they have minimal effect on your lifestyle. The reason that Indian Taxi drivers work and study is probably that since they are not Australian Citizens and are unlikely to stay here after their studies they are ineligible for HECS.
As stated above more effort needs to go into making apprenticeships more attractive although part of the problem is that when apprenticeships were a proper career path kids started them when they were 15 or 16 and the low wages were not an issue as most lived at home until their wages were at a level where they could support themselves. Now successive governments have deemed that all kids need to do year 12 regardless of their aptitude for academia and apprentices are 18 and wanting to leave home as soon as they get a job and find 1st year apprenticeship wages unattractive.

Tote

A lot what is said is true but Landyandy does live in a small country town so opportunites to have a normal hours job would be limited.
As for the Government I doing just fine:D:D
Andrew you could always get some extra coin building extreme trailers, as what we can by commercially compared to the quality of the "Black Tipper" you can find a niche....
Finally if you can't have a whinge on a forum supporting pommy cars where can ya:p

I'm 20, already moved out of home once and now i have moved back for my apprenticship. I got a nice chunk of annual leave payout from my previous job (ran a bottleshop) and im using this very carefully.
Got my sights set on 4 years from now when I'm qualified :D

Wow, I was earning $6 an hour cash for my first job in 1985, was shift work, though.
When I first read Mitch's post I thought, wow, don't apprentices get paid crap, and thought no more about it.
Then I read the stuff about HECS, and started thinking about Austudy and APA scholarships.
Austudy for a single person is $355.40 a fortnight, an APA scholarship is $385 a fortnight, which works out as a 70 hour week to $5.07 per hour for Austudy, and $5.5 an hour for APA.
And how many people say, you lucky scab, money for jam?
I don't know what you have to do to get Apprenticeship, and I never got Austudy, although I know it is means tested.
For an APA you have to have a high-marked undergraduate honours degree, or, substantial publication list in your field, or a previous research degree, plus publications, or being doing significant research in your area of study.
And all of it is training for a job that you'd like to be doing at the end of it.
Not that I'm having a whinge about any of this, I'm in the process of trying to start a bidding war between universities to add sweeteners to a scholarship. And, if and when I'll be glad to get it and get on with doing something that I reckon will be a lot of fun.
But, I get the feeling, and some of this is my own reactions to the above, that it might just be a lot socially acceptable to be an apprentice tradie than it is to be a uni student.
Cheers
Simon

So much for free education (and no, I'm not that naive) I believe if you are doing a degree after leaving school, this should be part of your education, and therefore not attract additional fees. If, though, you wish to be a professional Uni student, then any subsequent studies should maybe attract HECS. There are a lot of young school leavers whose families cant afford these fees and therefore some deserving students miss out. There is no guarantee a high paid job will be waiting at the end of Uni so this debt can be repaid. Scholarships allowed for these students years ago but no more.
Our daughter worked a number of menial jobs and had supportive parents with the means for her to complete her studies, which allowed her to start a career debt free. Many are not so fortunate. Mind you, she still doesn't have a permanent job after 3 years, as it seems the Education Department will not employ teachers full. This seems to be commonplace these days.

All my friends that went to uni or are still there work part time casual jobs. I got an OP6 and was going to go to uni to do engineering but then decided i wanted a year off, which turned into 2 years. then i realised i could get qualified in a trade and still become an engineer with a little bit of uni and get payed along the way.
Sure beats doing uni and 20+ h/week casual job IMO, i have seen some of the cr@p that my firends go through and thats just not for me :)

My work mates 16yo son now works at the plant...
He's doing shifts 7/4 and making $80k this year.. ;)
He was never going to be a Uni Boy... Struggled as it is...
As for Uni / HECS... Your right to a basic education is understandable.
Once you push past Yr12 you should pay for your studies..
My closest friend did Uni studies, focused, and within 2 years of completing his degree had repaid his HECS...

mmm makes me laugh
All the union lot want him in and Howard out and now they are moaning about him. coor i now know why i hate unions :).
After all ,all government and unions and always seem to me, to be jobs for the boys ( in other words, sort jobs and stupid wages for your mates and sod everyone else )
Never been in a union and never will be. They cause nothing but problems in my trade and have had huge problems because of it in Victoria so much that we sent so workers from Queensland down to do the job as it was cheap and quicker than pi**ing around with the Unions in Victoria. Then the unions moan
As i am 36 i have always be of the mind that no job is for life and no company shows you loyalty but want 100% loyalty from you . So the only way to get more money in most cases is to find another job. I am looking for a new job at the moment for that main reason as my wife is about to have a kid and i want to earn more so she does not have to work and make life easier. I like my job and company i am working for at the moment but am taking to a company that will offer me $20,000 more a year to do the same job. If they put a good package together i will be off .
just my bit :)

I'm with you NM.:BigThumb:
Unions came into being to fight the abuse by company proprietors.
Unfortunately, some unions, as they become powerful, also abused their power.
Now the swing is back to the coys - who are now abusing their power again.
I wonder how long it will take for the pendulum to swing back.
