G'day
My alternator is making some unusual noises making me think its bearings are cactus. I rang my supplier in Sydney today and I can get a new one landed for about $500 (100a).
Can they be repaired and if not, what are the most common conversions?

Try this if your old alt is 100 amp - there is a link in one of the replys for the 65amp version

If it is making noises that sound like bearings, that is probably what it is. I am not familiar with that alternator, but in general, alternator bearings are replaceable at a far lower cost than a new one. Common vehicles allow this to be done by exchange, but Defenders are rare enough that I doubt you can do this.
Give a local auto electrician a call - last time this happened to me (isuzu 110 not Defender) the nearest auto electrician repaired it in a few hours for about a third of the new cost, and that is more complicated because it has a vacuum pump on it. (It is still going 200,000km later)

Yeah, just get it rebuilt. Its an easy task for an autoelec. They often just have brass bushes, and wear out.
Cheers!
