Hi guys, got a question from a bit of a turbo noob...

I've had a good search of the forum and couldn't find an answer to this, so don't flame me if it's been covered to death already. :D

I've been fiddling with my landy and noticed there is quite a bit of oil leaking out the turbo hoses to the intercooler. Pulling all of this apart I have noticed oily SLUDGE in my bottom intercooler hose. see below
http://i297.photobucket.com/albums/mm208/winstonl/PICT1314.jpg
In addition, looking down into the compressor wheel of my turbo it looks like it's eaten something that didn't agree too much with is as the leading edge of the wheel is a bit chewed. The rest of the compressor looks ok by eye, but I havn't had a good look at the turbo yet.

Given the amount of oil that's in and around the compressor / intercooler inlet ( I use 100 synthetic, so it's pretty good at getting out of the engine! ) I am assuming it is coming from the turbo seal. I havn't had a chance to suss out how much play it has got in the turbo shaft, but it will be coming out to get the housing hpc'ed soon so that will be decision time!!

So, that's the backstory... here's the question:
Considering that I may need new seals, new compressor blades... is it economical to get this garrett m27 fixed?

Or is it time for a nice new VNT? I know the two are probably quite different in price....

but what are my options? I don't really want to just get a second hand turbo as I am putting the $$$ to sorting this truck out once and for all, but have heard of people wanting megabucks to reco turbos so am a bit worried.

Thanks in advance.

hi sorry i cant really help you but if it feels any better our 200tdi breaths really really heavy too! always oil in the turbo hose, has been to the point of it coating the airfilter and a mild drip coming out the bottom drain hole before now.

also my 300tdi is a oily breather too but no where near as bad as our 200...

Cheers mate, that's made me feel a bit better - but only as far as being one of the crowd. :p I might be pushing s$!t uphill chasing oily problems in a landy tho, eh?

I've been running amsoil synthetic for about 12 months now and have noticed that since going synthetic my oil leaks have become a lot more noticable.

Perhaps that's the problem, the slippery stuff's too slippery.

Anyone else think nothing of lotsa oily sludge in their 200tdi?

Dullbird: Nice pics on your site, mate!

Even the TD5 needs the intercooler cleaned every 100,000km.
Some blow by should be expected.
Redoing the seals in the turbo should be an easy job. The cost comes when there is movement in the shaft as then it needs a rebuild.
have never owned a 200TDI so don't know how much gunk to expect.

I wouldn't worry about it to much.
Just give everything a good flush and clean including the oil seperator that is on the side of the rocker cover.

Synthetic oil in a 200 tdi, I think this is a bit of a waste unless your getting it very cheap.

Oh and the turbo should be a garret T25.

Update:

Just talked to MTQ in Dandenong, Melb about a rebuild and they say about $550 to put a rebuild kit through the turbo. Professionally rebalanced and they will straighten and smooth the leading edges of the compressor blades that are damaged. ( probably from ingesting sand or large dust particles apparently )

Then I talked to Turbo Aust in Darra, Bris and they are getting back to me, but he give a "top of the head" price of $800 to kit and balance it. But no work on re-finishing the blades.

I'm thinking if there's not much play in the mainshaft, I'll just buy a kit and try to do it meself! I've had a read of some sites and it seems to me if you are carefull with putting everything back exactly the same way it comes out, the balance shouldn't be upset.

stay tuned.....

jjdisco: Thanks mate, yeah at the prices I am finding I think I might just clean it up! The synthetic was to try and quieten it all down. It worked too... The missus and I can talk and drive at the same time now. :D Although it was a good excuse for me to ignore her b4. ;)

MTQ's head office is at Acacia Ridge, and they have a branch at Toowoomba.

Which flavour of Amsoil are you running (and $$ ?)
It isn't that easy to come by in Oz.

Yeah, am having trouble finding some after the bloke who I originally got it off has disappeared on me now. :( I got a good price for it. I only paid about $100 for 1 gallon of 10W30 ( I think ) for the engine and enough gearbox oil to do the rest of the car. This was up on the Sunshine Coast about a year ago. I reckon the prices should be even better now!

My next visit up there I'm going to track some down... I'll let you know my progress if you want and the exact type of amsoil I get.

I was really quite surprised at how good it was.

Thanks for MTQ's info...:D I only called their melb office cos I down in melb right now. :D

10w-30 is a bit light for a 200Tdi, 5W-40 or 15W-40 is a better bet, but I'm happy with my Delvac 1 thanks @ $205/20 litres ;)

Some of the Amsoil gear oils are excellent.

BTW, all turbo diesels get pretty 'breathy' and the 200Tdi blows it back into the air cleaner to suck back through the engine. Could be just coming down the valve guides/seals too.
Also, if you were definitely using an xW-30, that will tend to be consumed a little bit more than a xW-40, all things being equal as the engine's clearances were designed around an xW-40 oil.

For those that want to know, I've just been quoted for my amsoil:

A 9.5L can of AME 15W/40 ( fully synthetic diesel engine oil ) will set you back $95.

Yeah, I was wrong with the viscosity of the oil.. my failing memory. :D it was a 40 weight.

I think I might need to clean the oil separator thingo that's hanging off the crankcase too!

Someone else suggested today that it might be coming more from the crankcase than the turbo. I know in a petrol you can see if there's a lot of "blowby" at the oil cap, can you do the same on the diesel or am I just going to get oil splattering everywhere?
