This statistic is quoted often and often about how long-lasting and wonderful Land Rovers are.
Well they are, of course.
But the statistic is misleading, or tripe, whichever you prefer.;)
Going from the numbers on these pages:
Land Rover FAQ - History, Production, Sales - Production Data (http://www.fourfold.org/LR_FAQ/FAQ.3.LR_production.html)
Land Rover - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Land_Rover#References)
http://uk.medialandrover.com/uploads/pdf/sixty_year_anniversary_timeline_4cd8.doc
The four millionth Land Rover was produced in 2007.
At the end of 1997 2,412,432
So by my numbers, about 40% of all Land Rovers have been made since 1997, and that's not including the last year.
That isn't too much of an ask, even for Land Rover, to have most of the vehicles made in the last ten years on the road.
In 1988 the fortieth anniversary statistic was 1,600,000 vehicles produced.
Which is 40% of all Land Rovers.
So 60% of all Land Rovers to 2007 were made after 1988.
Since Land Rover is still a growing brand, I doubt that the numbers of cars on the road versus total production is going to drop any time soon.
You'd bloody hope that 60% of all Land Rovers are still on the road.
:D

I thought the statistic was 70% (actually 75% on one of the Wikipaedia pages) of all Land Rovers ever made are still going not 60%. That extra 10% does make a difference. And I think it's meant to be read more like 7 out of every 10 Land Rovers ever made from any period are still going - not just a straight out 70% because you're right, all you need is one big production year and the figures are skewed.

Totally agree with the original post...;)
that 60% of my Land Rover is on the road, the rest is parked on the front lawn...
or is that 60% of the time my Land Rover is on the road and the remaining 40% of the time I use my Magna...
or is it that 60% of my on-road Land Rover works the rest of the car comes along for the ride :p
dont u dig sadistics

So 60% of all Land Rovers to 2007 were made after 1988.
How many Mitsubishi Sigmas, Nissan Pintaras or Toyota Coronas do you still see on the road from 1988? Virtually NONE. When you look at some very high volume production cars in Australia from 20 years ago you pretty soon see just how durable Land Rovers are. Theres not even that many Commodores still around from 1988 considering how damn many were made & sold.
I still think this is a valid and impressive statistic.

I'm of the opinion that you're all on the wrong track.
What they are talking about is that 60% of all Land Rover's is still on the road - that is all the oil that they leave whilst marking their territory over 60 years amounts to 60%
Don't tell the EPA about that! :D:D:D

I was thinking about this today. When I got my licence (1996) early 80s Commodores and Falcons where the vehicle of choice. Plenty of other early 80s cars on the road as well. Now late 90s vehicles are the P platers rust box of choice.
What I think it comes down to is that Land Rovers in first world countries are kept going by enthusiasts and in third world countries they are kept going by backyarders that cobble together anything.
So in Australia the old Jap or Aussie cars are sent to the wreckers as soon as the not quite so old ones become affordable to the poorest drivers.

What is the definition of "on the road" and who is counting...those people dressed in fluoro vests sitting in fold up chairs armed with clickers at intersections?

Of course then there's the standard comeback (from those that drive other marques)
60% of Land Rovers are still on the road,
the other 40% made it home.

or is it 100% of landrovers went out & only 60% made it back to a good home:confused:
those fords,xa,xb&xc's never see many of them around compared with holdens of the same years,hq,hj,hx&hz....i'd like to see % for these that are still around.
i think they painted the fords only on the outside & the rusted away from the inside:angel:....without any beachwork

The "70% still on the road" stat must be at least 10 years old now.
I reckon the proportion is dropping though, with Discos dominating production volumes and more likely to be written off than series / Defenders (hey, they get driven faster, hence more crash damage, and would quickly become uneconomic to repair in accidents due to things like airbags and fancy body panels and styling).

So 7 out of 10 2008 models are still going?

Yes, but balancing that is the fact that production has been increasing right through that ten years, so that you are right - Discos (and Freelanders, but not here) are dominating the numbers, but most of them are well under ten years old.

I am! Only one of my three is "on-the-road". One is "in-the-shed", and the other is "parked-outside".
So, given that they must not have counted anything but those "on-the-road", I reckon the proportion of survivors must be far higher...:D:D
Dan.
