For the last 9 months I've had a problem with my 1998 Disco with 96,000klm.
No ignition,the car would stop without warning.I have over the last 9 mths been towed by the NRMA no less than 7 times to a Sydney land Rover spesialist in the Northen beachers.I have had the whole ignition system replaced ecu reconditioned & alarm, still it would break down about 400klm later.To date I've payed out close to $2000.
They have rung me today saying they have fixed the car & is ready to pick up
with another charge of $250.My question is when is enough, enough! Should I keep paying for this fault!

If they are re-fixing an existing fault that they obviously haven't fixed properly, i can't see why they are charging you again, even electrical equipment has a warrenty period.

Find another mechanic once it's sorted, B & S aren't the best from what i've heard, i only dealt with them once:twisted:

Hi Mate , Sorry to hear about the bad luck you're having . It will be interesting to know if this latest fix has stopped the problem . surely there is only so much that can be changed to fix this ? Good luck with it :);).

Second opinion. Going back to the same place time and again won't see anything different done.

I depends on the "Faults"

My perspective on taking your car to a "Specialized Dealer Repair Center" is this .....
They plug into the computer and all faults should register
From the fault codes ... They replace or fix the problem .... Answers should be correct and based on fact ... Not fiction!!!

A reconditioned ECU .... Why did they replace this????
For $250 ... Did they replace the "Amplifier" ???? (as this can be a main culprit of sudden stop / no spark) .. Also, do these models have the crank sensor?? // Was this replaced??

Have they just been doing a "Hit & miss" repairs or have they been fixing due to "fault codes"

Ok .picked the car up last night,they found a fault with the wiring plug that goes into the ignition igniter, replaced ignition igniter.
They do advertise they have the latest scan tools for LR

A list of thing that have been replaced or reconditioned:
6 ignition igniters .........YES 6
3 Coils.................YES 3
The ECU checked, found some dry solder,repaired.
Spider alarm reconditioned.
I have also replace Plugs & leads.

They have been checking everything,even been down to the auto electrition 3 times.But to this stage 400 to 500 klms later I'm back on the tow truck!

In 1994 I bought a brand new V8 disco - for the first 6 months you would be happily driving along and the engine would stop. When you pulled over, the engine could be started and away you would drive only for it to happen half an hour later or it would not happen for days.

Back and forward to the dealer - no luck - in those days Landrover had Customer Care and I called them up and they sent a guy out when my car was going back to the dealer - he looked at it and pulled out a pen, pulled off the MAF connector and bent the pins - he said it would be OK from now on as the was a problem with the bocsh connector and the pins were loosing contact with vibration. Well it didn't fix the problem but it was the cause of the problem and when it stopped I too carried a pen to adjust the pins.

In the end I got an auto electrician the replace the connector with a new one and never had the problem again.

You never know, as you have replaced everything else this might be the issue. Next time she stops play with the MAF connector pins and see what happens.
